2010 FIFA WORLD CUP - SOUTH AFRICA

Australia's national men's football team, the Qantas Socceroos, return to the FIFA World Cup for the the 3rd time; this time in South Africa 2010 after qualifying through Asia for the second time after a 36 year absence.

Australia previously qualified for Oceaia in 2006. Representing Oceania for the last time, the Socceroos defeated the Solomon Islands over two legs to win the Oceania Confederation place but had to defeat the 5th placed South American team - Uruguay - to qualify. They did this with a 0-1 loss in Montevideo and a 1-0 win in Sydney on November 16 last year. The resulting penalty shoot out, won with the famous goal by John Aloisi, reverberated across the world, and led to a seond round place, going out controversially to Italy.

Now in 2010 after getting through with Japan, South Korea, and DPR (North) Korea over the past 2 years the 23 Aussies take on the tough opponents of Group D in the 2010 tournament. Australia and North Korea didn't get out of the group stage. South Korea was knocked out by Uruguay in round of 16.

Germany defeated Uruguay 3-2 in the 3rd/4th place play-off, and Spain defeated Netherlands 1-0 to become only the 8th country to have won the World Cup whilst the Dutch still haven't, having lost their third final.

Now for Brasil 2014!

    FIFA Overview - Group D

    Mens World Cup: Group D

    Australia 2 - Serbia 1

23/06/2010: The Qantas Socceroos' World Cup hopes in Group D were kept alive for most of the game but despite winning 2-1 against Serbia the game between Germany and Ghana ended in only a 1-0 win to Germany - not enough! Australia earn 4 points at this World Cup but Ghana goes through on goal difference.

    Ghana 1 - Australia 1

20/06/2010: The Qantas Socceroos' World Cup hopes in Group D rested on a result against Ghana in Rustenberg on Sunday morning and after going down to 10 men with the dubious sending off of Harry Kewell after 25 mins the team played with heart, and continued to attack. Bring on Serbia and end the tournament with the same passion.

    Germany 4 - Australia 0

14/06/2010: The Qantas Socceroos' World Cup hopes in Group D were going down, goal by goal from Germany, in Durban as the sun was rising across Australia - with Tim Cahill's red card adding to Pim Verbeek's woes. Australia now move on to play Ghana on Saturday night and will need to win to keep their hopes alive.

    Mens International Friendly:

    Australia 1 - USA 3

05/06/2010: The Qantas Socceroos World Cup preparations continued tonight in Johannesburg, where the Socceroos lost 1-3 to team USA in a very solid hit-out for both sides before their opening games in a week's time. Falling behind in the first half Tim Cahill came up with a fine goal, but despite a better 2nd half the US strikers were too sharp.
