NSW McDonald's Cup 2010 By BOTN writers
Premier League Marconi Stallions eventually defeated Super League side Spirit FC on penalties in the NSW McDonald’s Cup Final held at Lily Homes Stadium, Seven Hills on Sunday.
For 90 minutes Spirit matched their illustrious foes, though perhaps giving them too much respect in the first half.
Then with the score locked at 0-0 they went strongly into 30 minutes of extra time, with extra time substitute Tim Simpson almost grabbing the trophy twice when he shot ast the keeper and then when he hit the post.
Into dreaded penalties and Josh De Kelly and Tom Lovell were the two unfortunate Spirit FC players to miss their spot-kicks, as Christopher Nunes drove home the final and winning penalty for a 7-6 victory...
Spirit had reached the final with a solid winning run that included defeats of NSW Premier League sides South Coast Wolves and Blacktown City Demons, and having scored scored seventeen goals en-route to the final conceding only two in the process.
The win is Marconi’s first piece of silverware since the 1995/96 NSL season, a fantastic day for the club, who remains in the hunt for the League and Cup double, with the side in a strong position to reach finals series football.
Spirit FC’s performance was exceptional, and to bow out on penalties is a cruel end to the side’s remarkable run through the McDonald’s Cup competition. The Super League side has done betetr in the Cup than the league where their form has been patchy and they sit 6th, with the weekend's game versus riavls Nortehrn Tigers in hand, so it now needs to throw all efforts to secure finals football in the the League itself.
