Super League leaders Parramatta Eagles lost only their second game on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Mills Park Asquith, with the Northern Tigers coming from behind to win 2-1.
Parramtta were looking to put early pressure on the home side, and get play wide. Bryan Soane got forward and crossed from the right to find Daniel Fogarty who scored a 2nd minute goal past Tigers reserve keeper Marc Messina (regular Stuart Page having been suspended for this game). 0-1
While the Tigers were quite competitive Parramatta looked almost dominant early and in the 27th minute Chris MacDonald got a header on target but it deflected off the left upright.
Tigers forwards however were probing all the time with their highest scorer and captain Paul Davies causing concern for the Eagles in the 31st minute - with a weaving run down the right, beating two defenders, and getting a ball in to Tom Spencer, who couldn't get a clear shot on target. Max Glanville 5 minutes later also found space down the right but shot across the goal.
Brendan Salemah hit a shot off-line in the 43rd minute and Glanville at the 'keeper just before the break, and the Tigers weren't looking so moth-eaten.
Both sides were stalemated in midfield after the break and it looked like that early goal might be crucial, but in the 70th minute Tigers'Glanville had a shot blocked by the 'keeper. Three minutes later Tom Spencer knocked the ball into the net past Eagles impressive 'keeper Tony Costa after a bad rebound put him in an ideal situation in front of goal. 1-1
Parramatta's Matthew Clowes hit the crossbar with a free-kick from 30m in the 77th minute, and Messina had to come fast to confront and take the ball off the feet of Fogarty. Two minutes later Fogarty was unable to get a clear shot in.
The Eagles solid defence cracked in the 87th minute with Tigers substitute Park Sung-yun quick to make a loose ball his own and neatly beating Costa after heavy pressure from the Tigers. 2-1
Fogarty couldn't keep his shot down before time and the Eagles wings had been clipped, an event that would be cheered by many sies in the competition as Parramatta had threatened to go 5 points clear at this early stage.
There seems something on the north side of Sydney doesn't sit well with the South Granville based side after also losing to Gladesville Hornsby's Spirit FC a few rounds before - although the problem at least doesn't extend to the Central Coast. Both sides have McDonalds Cup games during the week, with Tigers heading west to Bensons Lane on Wednesday to take on Hawkesbury City and the Eagles hosting Fairfield City Lions on Wednesday.
