Central Coast Mariners FC National Youth League team confirmed it's place at the top of the league table taking 3 points and fourth straight victory in a 2-1 defeat of a weakened Sydney FC.

Goals from Adam Kwasnik after just seven minutes and super-sub Mitchell Mallia, with his first involvement in play in the 56th minute, gave the visitors three points against last season's Premiers and Champions, after the home side had come back almost as the referee raised his whistle for half-time, through a much involved Joe Gibbs.

The Mariners made the most of their overage players in the 6th minute when Ahmad Elrich curled one onto the crossbar (helped on by the Sydney 'keeper Nenad Vekic) and the ball rolled out to Adam Kwasnik on the right who steered his shot in. 0-1

Seven minutes later Sydney's Joel Chianese was played in down the right behind the Coast defence by Raymond Miller who had made a good run down the right, but Chianese's shot was blocked by Andrew Redmayne in the Mariner's goal, but a few minutes later Redmayne could have come to grief as he left the midfielders shot and it just passed his far post.

One minute later Andrew Clark blasted wide when free, after being found by a Matt Lewis cross.

As the half wore down Gibbs controversially beat the off-side trap and lobbed Redmayne. 1-1

Mitchell Mallia came on as the youth substitutes started to roll after 60 mins, and in his first play he received the ball on the left with three static Sydney defenders in line fronting him. He cut inside making space to curl the ball past Vekic at the far right post. 1-2

Chianese fired over the bar on 58 minutes and on the hour could probably have counted himself unlucky not to have won his side a penalty, after it appeared he had been brought down inside the area, however Brett Hookham adjudged it was marginally outside, and Dimitrios Petratos sent the resulting set piece over the bar.

The sky blues had a lot of posession and created opportunities; first Petratos a great save from Redmayne after voleying a cross from Miller, and then Chianese butchered a chance.

Matthew Lewis had a shot cleared and Panny Nikas sent a free kick on the left across the face of goal late in the game but the Mariners had already done enough to take a 2-1 victory, and significantly to open up a five point lead at the top of the National Youth League ladder as round 15 is played out.
