The Brisbane Roar attained their third win of the season following a
two-nil victory in warm conditions at the AIS Athletic Track. The
result still leaves Brisbane sitting second last in the league.
The AIS commenced the game, as they have too often in the past,
having conceded an early goal. Although the AIS provided the opening
salvo of the game when Terry Antonis volleyed wide, it was at the
other end that the damage was done.
Some poor defending at the edge of the penalty area allowed Timothy
Smits to slide the ball in to Isaka Cernak. With only Aaron Lennox,
the AIS goalkeeper, to beat, the forward rounded his opponent and
slid the ball into the empty net.
The goal did little to encourage the AIS to attack, as they continued
to play the ball around at the back and send long balls to the wings.
Unfortunately, their defence had a habit of finding the opponents as
well.
At the other end, one of Roar's four over-age players Smits sent a
cracker of a shot from 30m out that bounced off the cross-bar and up
into the air. Lennox, although beaten by the original shot, recovered
to tip the falling ball over the bar for a corner.
Lennox was called into action again with ten minutes left of the
period, saving at the feet of Kenneth Dougall. When the ball spilled
to Antony Schiavo, the Roar player failed to find the target with the
goal begging.
The play of the game did not alter much in the second period, with
Cernak again adding his name to the score card early in the period.
Just ten minutes following the break Luke Bratten sent a long ball
from half-way over the defence for Cernak to run on to. He faced
Lennox and slid the ball just inside the far post.
The AIS did have the ball in the net when Antonis pounced on a
rebound from a stinging Marc Warren shot. Unfortunately, Antonis was
ruled to be in an offside position at the time of Warren's shot.
It was a small respite for the AIS as Brisbane continued to attack in
waves. From a freekick outside of the box, Stefan Vrbesic found the
crossbar, the ball rebounding back into play and cleared.
AIS probably had the final chance of the game with just over ten
minutes left. Eli Babalj, who has apparantely signed with the new
Melbourne franchise, got behind the defence and ran on towards goal.
His shot, was less impressive, sliding past the left upright.
