A nicely taken first-half goal from Andrija Jukic gave Perth Glory a 1-0 win over previous table toppers Central Coast Mariners in heavy, drizzly rain, conditions at Lisarow's Pluim Park today. The win moves the Glory into top spot on the National Youth League and was the Glory's seventh in succession (more noteable as it was achieved with only Jukic as an overage inclusion).

The Mariners fielded a strong side for the match with A-League defender Chris Doig returning from injury (and got 60 mins game time) into a side that also featured over-age players Adam Kwasnik, Nigel Boogaard and Shane Huke. Despite this the home side was profligate and struggled in the final third - unable to finish off the many chances that were or could have been created.

Under misty rain and on the heavy pitch the game started tentatively as both sides tried to settle and it wasn't until the 10th minute that a real chance came along. Nigel Boogaard lifted a long ball down the right to Adam Kwasnik who slipped it to Panni Nikas. The captain couldn't get a clear shot in under solid pressure from a switched-on Glory backline.

Six minutes later and quite out of the blue, Glory grabbed their match-winning goal. An innocuous ball over the defence saw neither 'keeper Mathew Ryan come to take it, or left-fullback Matthew Lewis clear it. As it bounced free Glory's sharp-shooter Adrija Jukic pounced, and curled a left-foot shot around Ryan and into the top-left of the goal.

As the Coast sought to lift their pressure, and Jerry Kalouris got a telling cross past the goal and Nick Fitzgerald couldn't get it on target, and Kwasnik shot wide, the Glory were breaking on the counter. Ludovic Boi made a run through midfield, unstopped, and let fly from 25m, crashing the ball against the Mariners cross-bar in the 20th minute.

Shane Huke sought to inject himself more out of midfield and in the 27th minute he weaved through with a string of 1-2 passes, and picked out Kwasnik, whose flick sailed just past the left upright.

Glory hardly had a chance for the rest of the half but the Coast's moves, though they had quantity, fell down on quality, fizzling out at the final pass.

Cheekingly from the return from half-time break kick-off Glory tested Ryan in the Mariner's goal with a shot, however the well-positioned custodian was not troubled.

The back-line from Perth, though shaded in height by the locals, continued to do enough to force chances wide, or make the strikers rush.

Midway through the second half chances fell to Glory, when Ryan Pearson's run ended with a pile-driver shot that just cleared the crossbar, and Mariner's substitute Mitchell Mallia shot on target only to see the ball deflected by the fortunate postioning of Alex Pearson's legs as he dived to spread himself.

Then Ryan got down on the wet turf fast to smother a shot from Glory's Adam Taggart.

The visitors continued to make the Mariners work hard, raiding constantly, and breaking up possession in midfield; though the Mariners looked better balanced with Lewis on the right and Kalouris dropping to left back.

The last chances fell to the Coast as they desperately tried to minimize the damage. Kwasnik shot wide on the left, and the Perth 'keeper punched a Panni Nikas on-target free-kick away enthusiastically.

Despite never getting on top in play the Glory deserved their win, if only that they made a chance out of nothing and took it, whilst the Coast made little out of a fair bit.
