In stifling heat at Gosford the Gold Coast went to a two goal lead, before the Mariners got their act together and grabbed two back, for a fair 2-2 draw.

Gold Coast's Chris Harold shot over the crossbar after 6 minutes; but in the heat little was being created.

In the 24th minute the visitors got behind the static Mariners defence in numbers, and it was 'keystone cops' time. Eventually neither Redmayne or james Brown could clearly control the ball, and it trickled off Brown's shin and over the line. 0-1

Only the Mariners overage players, Englishman Nicky Travis and Welshman Jonathan Brown, seemed experienced enough to adjust. In the 36th minute Brown got pressure onto Jerrad Tyson in the Gold Coast goal, with the young 'keeper just managing to punch a cross clear. Travis tried a 35m shot just before the break than the keeper had to palm away.

Coach Tony Walmsley made all his three substitutions at half-time, with immediate impact as the Mariners came out looking better organised and focussed in the second half.

Substitute Nicholas Fitzgerald was immediately into action, taking a final shot just wide after a scrambling in the Gold Coast goalmouth to try to clear.

Nevertheless they went further behind with a quick counter-attack by the visitors after Panni Nikas had failed to beat the 'keeper with a shot after holding off two during a run down the right. Suddenly Andrew Barisic was picked out, lurking, and slipped it home. 0-2

Two snap shots by Ben Halloran and James Brown in succession had shown the visitors were still in it, but the midfield was now back in the Mariners control, and were using width.

In the 72nd minute substitute Bernie Ibini-Isei sent of a cross that forced the 'keeper to palm for a corner. Five minutes later his threat was again evident, with a cross from the right finding Jerry Kalouris pushed up and the promising young defender headed in. 1-2

In the 84th minute another substitute, Mitchell Mallia, ran down the left, beat a defender, and glided the ball across goal for Ibini-Isei to slot home. 2-2

Action at the end, as Fitzgerald shot over the crossbar, Brady Smith had a fierce shot deflected, and Barisic tried to chip Redmayne but was wide.

The Mariners remain on top with Perth Glory two points behind and the bye, but 6 clubs are still in the finals race.
