Central Coast Mariners missed a chance to embed themselves at the top of the National Youth League when thrashed 1-4 by F3 derby rivals Newcastle Jets in their rescheduled Round 23 match on Tuesday at Pluim Park.

In a dire defensive performance not many reputations were enhanced despite the prospect of being lifted for a trip to Wellington for the HAL R27 game. Perhaps it was due to that, or a Pluim Park effect.

Newcastle Jets looked livelier and goals by Fabian Iacovelli, James Virgili, Matthew Sim, and Mirjan Pavlovic were well deserved, even if in fact the first two were aided by defensive blunders.

The Mariners looked comfortably in control, if not comfortable on the ball, for the first 18 minutes with some penetration down the right by Bernie Ibini-Isei, including one chance that overage player Dylan Macallister couldn't make anything of.

Then however an aggressively minded Fabian Iacovelli made an incisive run and shot in the 19th minute. Reserve goalkeeper Nik Matic got to the ball to parry the shot away but Iacovelli was following through and had space to slot it inside the right upright. 0-1

The home side did have its first half chances; from Nathan Sherlock, Brady Smith, Nick Fitzgerald, and Matthew Mallia - but the Jets defence did well to keep them from being converted.

As the one minute of stoppage time rolled over, the Mariners were lax in anticipating and clearing the ball in their goal area from a lob and an alert James Virgili on the run pounced to nab a second. 0-2

The second half started much as the first, but it was livened by award of a penalty well behind play with Luka Dukic deemed to have been holding onto the shirt of a Jets player in the area. Matthew Sim stepped up and despite custodian Andrew Redmayne going the correct way, he couldn't stop the goal. 0-3

The Mariners reply was restricted to long-range speculators by Adam Ormsby and Ibini-Isei, and it seemed inevitable when in 76th minute Mirjan Pavlovic was able to outjump his markers from a corner from the left by Jesse Pinto and head into the goal. 0-4

Nick Fitzgerald took an opportunity and drove from 25m with a snap shot that was easily held by Jets glove-man Robbie Kolak.

Small conolation then in the 83rd minute when substitute Gavin Forbes controlled a long ball, and rounded Kolac who had come to cover, and at an acute angle he hit the shot over and into the unguarded net. 1-4

Pavlovic made two chances late but couldn't extend the damage for the Jets.
