4pm, Saturday 27 February, 2010
at Pluim Park, Lisarow, NSW

Central Coast Mariners FC 3
(Matt Crowell 9, Nick Fitzgerald 69, Bernie Ibini-Isei 76')
defeated
Newcastle United Jets FC 2
(Fabian Iacovelli 44', Damian Brosque 49')

Central Coast Mariners reversed the result of two weeks ago against Newcastle Jets, and in doing so went back to the top of the A-League Youth competition, albeit on goal difference.

Drama started off the pitch just before the kick off, when a number of Mariners fans let off a red smoke bomb as players were walking on to the field. Security took the unusual and severe step of escorting all of them outside the ground. They were not concerned greatly as they reformed outside the boundary fence and continued to chant during the game and in addition let off a smoke bomb each time the Mariners scored!

On the pitch action hotted up immediately with Mariner's 'keeper was called into action twice in three minutes when William Angel made two great runs down the right flank and crossed into the penalty for firstly Damien Brosque and then Fabian Iacovelli caused Matthew Ryan to make two good saves. Ryan again had to be brave when he dived at the feet of James Virgili who had come in behind the defence to pick up a loose clearance and appeared certain to score.

Mariners continued to thwart the Jets good opening and after nine minutes Porter broke away, crossed inside to Matthew Crowell who fired a low shot past Jet's goalie Dion Shaw into the bottom corner of the net from 25 metres.

The match flowed from end to end with both goalies kept busy. Adam Kwasnik went close for the Mariners with two headers from corners and Iacovelli was causing many problems with his continuous probing amongst the Mariners defence.

Just as it seemed that the Mariners would go into the half time break with a 1-0 lead, Iacovelli made one last venture into the penalty area and picked up a loose ball to fire an unstoppable shot past Ryan to eqaualise.

The second half started in similar veins to the first with the Jets making all the running and within four minutes were in the lead when Brosque fired a great ball into net from at least 20 metres that gave Ryan no chance.

The Mariners substituted Gavin Forbes with Bernie Ibini-Isei and the game immediately changed. Ibini-Isei was straight into the action with his long striding runs causing all sorts of problems for the Jets defence.

He, Matthew Lewis and captain Panagiotis Nikas were combining in many moves and midway through the first half Ibini-Isei sent a cross into the Jet's penalty that was half cleared by the defence but the ball went straight to Nicholas Fitzgerald who hit it low and hard into the far corner for an equaliser.

Six minutes later Ibini-Isei scored a well deserved goal when he latched on to a loose ball in the Jet's penalty area to give the Mariners the lead. During the last fifteen minutes tempers became a bit frayed, and three cautions were issued, as the Mariners were intent on keeping their important slender lead and the Jets were desperate for an equaliser.

Ryan was again called on to make two vital saves, firstly from Jarrod Ross when he made an incredible stop from a shot from no more than five metres, and a second when Iacovelli appeared certain to equalise.

Players of the match were for Mariners, Bernie Ibini-Isei and Matthew Ryan and for the Jets Fabian Iacovelli and Damian Brosque.

Mariners are into the semi finals but need to win against Sydney FC next Saturday to take the Minor Premiership whilst Newcastle travel to Adelaide who also need a win to ensure a semi final position.
