Opinion: Football Tragics Trip to Broadmeadow, Newcastle - June 2011- for the BOTN NSW team
No Magic Today either lost to Lake Macquarie FC 3 (Harry Maguire 11', Dylan Murphy 68', Liam Thornton 88') ![]() (Lake Macquarie keeper Brad Swancott makes a fine save)
The Back-of-the-Net.com NSW team continued their travels to 'country' locations by visiting Wanderers Oval, Broadmeadow in Newcastle to take in an NBN State League match between top of the table Broadmeadow Magic and fourth placed Lake Macquarie.
The weather was brilliant, the steak sandwiches nourishing and there was a great crowd in attendance (considering an NRL match was being played one kilometre up the road, and Disney on Ice next door).
Broadmeadow boasted a number of previous senior Newcastle representatives, whilst Lake Macquarie fielded three former Central Coast Mariners players, and they put on a performance of a high quality.
As expected, Broadmeadow started at a fast rate and immediately had Lake Macquarie under pressure.
On the six minute mark they received a free kick about 25 metres in the middle of the field and Peter Haynes tried an obvious planned move with cheeky lob over the Lakes defence, but experienced goalkeeper Brad Swancott was up to the challenge and gathered the high ball in front of an onrushing attackers.
It was, however, Lake Macquarie who opened the scoring when a corner kick was taken by Damien Brown, who passed back to former Mariner’s teammate Andre Gumprecht.
He expertly passed to Harry Maguire to slide the ball into the bottom of the net to put Broadmeadow on the back foot.
Broadmeadow immediately retaliated and again put Lake Macquarie under intense pressure but some brilliant goalkeeping by Swancott - especially with a mighty save from a deflected long range shot by John Bennis that looked all the way a goal - and solid work by the Lake’s defence kept them at bay until the half time break.
The second half was a much more even affair with both sides having creating good opportunities to score. It was Lake Macquarie again, however, who made the most of their chances, firstly in the 68th minute when they attacked down the right hand side.
Maguire received a clearing ball and sped away to near the corner post. He sent in a curling low cross to the far post which was met with a simple tap in by substitute Dylan Murphy to add a second vital goal.
Broadmeadow kept trying but appeared to be tiring and frustrated by the ability of the Lake’s defence to recover quickly, and also the remarkable saves and smothering stops by goalkeeper Swancott.
With two minutes to go it was finally decided with a third Lake Macquarie goal and what a goal it was!
Gumprecht, who had been receiving a “bit of stick” from the home crowd, picked up a pass from his defence and made a run down the right flank and sent in a beautiful lobbed cross over the top of the Broadmeadow defence to an unmarked Liam Thornton who rose high to head into an empty net.
Needless to say Gumprecht’s actions and signals brought even louder shouts from the home fans!!
Your reporters did not have the opportunity to interview either coach, as we had to make a dash to the local and very nearby railway station to meet their train home (No posh cars or limousines for us).
We were, however, exceptionally pleased that we had made the trip, as the game had been full of excitement and of a very high standard, and it proved once again that you don’t only have to go to high profile matches to be entertained.
We have found before that there is plenty of good quality football being played “outside the big smoke”, as on this day!
Congratulations to everybody involved for providing us with another great day out!
