Gold Coast United, through the assistance of their three over-age players, won four goals to nil over Sydney FC in the round 2 match of the National Youth League at the Sydney Football Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The result somewhat flattered the Gold Coast as Sydney were easily the better team in the opening period. Yet, the affect of Chris Broadfoot, Bas Van Den Brink and Scott Higgins proved to be the difference between the two teams.

Broadfoot showed up the Sydney defence netting three times a feat that Sydney's David Gullo could not match when he was presented with three good opportunities in the opening half. Gold Coast got off to the best start, netting in the fifth minute. Golgol Mebrathu ran through the midfield and released Broadfoot on the right. His true strike gave the sixteen year-old goal keeper Aaron Liddell no chance.

Yet, although the momentum appeared with the visitors, it would be Sydney who dominated the remainder of the half. Their midfield, governed by Wely Al-Rikaby caused havoc creating numerous chances for the home team.

The recipient of most of these opportunities was David Gullo. No less than three times on the first stanza was he free with the the Gold Coast keeper, Higgins, to beat, and on each occasion the experienced keeper held his own.

Higgins was proving the foil for the Sydney attacks and Al-Rikaby's well-placed passes. Easily the two best players on the park in the opening half, it allowed for an opening and exciting game. With Sydney's efforts in the first half not rewarded, they were to pay when the Gold Coast gained ascendancy as the match wore on.

Mebrathu was the instigator early on, first leading a counter-attack that was only halted by a face-to-face save by Liddell. Then Mebrathu's corner was met by the visitor's captain Zac Anderson, but his header went agonsingly wide.

Following the requisite flurry of substitutes around the hour mark, Gold Coast maintained the pressure and were duly rewarded when Koh Satake's well-taken free kick from approximately 20m out, curled around the wall and rested in the bottom left corner.

With just over ten minutes remaining, Gold Coast made the game theirs. Joshua Brillante fed Broadfoot who then chipped Liddell from close range. The result now no longer in doubt, one of the three Gold Coast over-age players was removed from the field, their keeper, Higgins.

As the game was nearing its conclusion, Al-Rikaby had one more chance to put Sydney onto the scorecard, but his volley from 10m through a crowd was saved by the reserve keeper, Tim Anderson. In fact, Broadfoot on a minute from time netted his third to give the Gold Coast a resounding 4-0 win.

The result propels the Gold Coast to joint top of the National Youth League table and leaves Sydney in a place rather similar to their first grade teammates.
