Brisbane have extended their longest unbeaten run at home with a 2-0 midweek win over the Central Coast Mariners.

The Roar, playing game two of three in seven days at Suncorp, were the more spritely of the two sides all night and continued their exciting fast paced football, leaving the Central Coast looking a little stale.

A surprise exclusion from the game was new Mariner Patricio Perez, who was ruled out late with a back injury after being highlighted by Brisbane rock Luke Devere as the dangerman earlier in the week.

The game started fiestely, with Rostyn Griffiths trampling diminutive Roar captain Matt McKay. The crowd and players were even more outraged with Griffiths attempts to dismount McKay, seeming to be doing more harm than good.

Referee Chris Beath was on the spot to give Griffiths the yellow, but Zwaanswijk decided to get himself involved, which just resulted in the Mariners getting two cards in the first two minutes.

The Roar started the game like their others at home this season, dominating possession and showing some terrific build up play, just missing the finishing.

The Captain lead from the from, with his curling left foot shot from outside the box only being denied by the post and a glancing header off a late run onto a bullet of a cross from Franjic just sliding past the post.

The Roar were rewarded however on the 21st minute when Broich curled a half cross, half shot, into the top corner of the goal from the left wing. Whether it was deliberate or not, it looked sensational, and gave them a deserved lead.

Broich was causing the Mariners all kind of problems, they gave him far too much space 20 out which enticed a shot out of the German. Keeper Matt Ryan manged to parry the shot, but in a strange effort to avoid a corner, scrambled the ball back into play, where a crumbing Reinaldo managed to miss an open goal.

The second half was much the same as the first with the Central Coast bombing it long to McBreen and Simon upfront, but Matt Smith and Luke Devere were two strong in the air for the front-men.

The Roar were still holding possession, and frustrating their opponents into fouls. Substitutes Soloranzo and Nichols gave a different edge to the attack, playing through balls instead of the hold up and quick passing that Reinaldo and Co. gives them.

But the Roar’s second goal came from the unlikely source of Ivan Franjic on the right back’s first game back from injury. The ball spilled out from a Brisbane corner and rolled on for a steaming Franjic. Keeping the ball low, the shot sliced through a crowded box and smashed into the back of the net, Ryan didn’t know anything about it.

So the Roar have cemented second spot, and will look to keep this week unbeaten when facing Melbourne on Saturday, and the Mariners have the week off to let Perez recover and watch the tapes to see why they couldn’t keep the ball.

Assistant referees: Nathan Macdonald and Ashley Beecham; Fourth official: Jarred Gillett

    BOTN Player Points:
    3. Thomas Broich (BR) (Some great play, runner for by of the season)
    2. Luke Devere (BR) (Didn’t give Simon an inch. Beat him 3 times on his own lead)
    1. Ivan Franjic (BR) (Brilliant goal, that goes over the bar 95% of the time but he kept it down and was rewarded)

Pitch rating: 8/10 (Interesting note, Roar keeper Theo was booked on half time for what looked like marking the centre of the goal on his six-yard box. Making a mark on the paint is bookable? Goalies do it every game)

Game rating: 7/10 (Solid performance by the Roar, played their usual football and I don’t know what Central Coast showed up to play, but it wasn’t great.)
