North Queensland Fury have shown they haven't lost it at home when they bounced back with a dogged 2-1 victory over visitors Perth Glory in front of a small but very enthusiastic crowd in often torrential rain at Townsville on Friday night.

With both clubs having off-field issues highlighted during the week there was a lot to prove. Both Fury's Frank Straka, who was allowed on the bench under appeal, and 'acting interim' head Glory coach Ian Ferguson (formerly of Fury) made changes to their starting 11. Notable was reserve keeper Alex Vrteski coming in for Glory over Tando Velaphi.

Glory started well, with Steven McGarry curling a 7th minute shot to the top right hand corner of the goal, where Fury 'keeper Justin Pasfield was able to stretch to palm it away.

In the 16th minute Fury's David Williams sent a ball out wide to striker Chris Payne who made ground, feinted to turn in but picked out the top left corner of the net past the stranded Perth custodian Aleks Vrteski. 1-0

Glory's Michael Baird made up for recent poor finishing with a simple tap in at the 21st minute mark. Fury's defence seemed to have a move covered but took mostly the wrong options and space opened up for the ball to fly froma tackle on Baird, over to the left to Anthony Skorich who appeared to be stranded off-side, but he picked the ball up and as Pasfield closed fast he cut it square to an unmarked Baird. 1-1

The northerners attempted to overcome Glory's growing dominance and after Brad McDonald had rattled the crossbar, and the end of the half approached, captain Gareth Edds swivelled and hit a shot that Vrteski did well to cover.

As the second half started the rain grew heavier and both teams opened up some end to end play in the greasy conditions.

It was the local side that was able to lift under these conditions and in the 72nd minute. Payne this time became provider, with a quick ball out to David Williams on the right, who turned on the pace and broek clear. Bearing down on the penalty area he sent his shot inside the right post beating the hapless Vrteski. 2-1

In driving rain the score remained the same, despite Glory's desperation.

The Fury had pre-sold 'over 6,000' tickets for this match and were expecting at least 7,000, however after monsoonal like conditions deluged Townsville 90 minutes before kick-off, only a crowd of 4,011 endured the truly woeful torrential rain conditions. The Fury team and fans however showed torrents of other types - of determination and enthusiasm! Let us hope they can keep these at high levels all the way until Wednesday 27th, and the mid-week game away in Newcastle.

For Glory it will be a long week trying to get ready to host Sydney FC and that visitor should at least give them hope, as long as it isn't a banana-peel.
