Sydney held on by the skin of their teeth to secure an undeserved point, drawing 1-1 against the far superior Brisbane Roar tonight at the Sydney Football Stadium.

Outclassed throughout the game they weathered a withering assault in the final minutes and can now bite on their trembling lower lip as they consider the mammoth task required to first get off the foot of the table and then scrape into finals contention.

The omens were bad when the ATM robbed me of $20 and my pie was chilly. Nick Carle, as expected, was again unfit. But Sydney were good to go with the ensemble that succeeded against easy beats Perth Glory a week earlier.

But Brisbane, fashioning a lengthy undefeated streak, were far from easy beats.

The first shot was Sydney's: a high lob from Hirofumi Moriyasu. A Bruno Cazarine cross from the left was cleared out of Brisbane's goal box.

Thomas Broich was neat finding a running Reinaldo and Roar skipper Matt McKay hit a good ball for Ivan Franjic, spoiled by Hayden Foxe, conceding the first of 14 corners against Sydney.

From a free kick on the left Sydney conceded another corner. Luke DeVere got up in front of Ivan Necevski and flicked the ball on inside the right post. Sydney were already losing.

Massimo Murdocca, supplied by Broich, almost got a second immediately but blasted low outside the right post from the edge of the box.

Matthew Smith headed clear another Sydney cross from the left. Cazarine was running strongly but getting little service. Then Alex Brosque managed to whip in a cross from the left corner, finding Cazarine perfectly but with no way through three defenders.

Brisbane hit a long clearance and a guy next to me noted Foxe's lack of pace against Reinaldo.

Reinaldo got another good break thanks to a Sydney bungle but was caught and dived under pressure from Stephan Keller and someone behind me said he should put his Speedos on.

Brisbane's passing out from the back was good (Erik Paartalu); Sydney's was not (Foxe).

The Roar were in control.

Luke DeVere made Brosque and Cazarine look silly. Sydney were only managing panic clearances (Terry McFlynn and Scott Jamieson) to no-one. Keller gave a bad long ball and Brisbane were back in Sydney's faces again.

Shannon Cole, dispossessed on the right wing, set McKay on a long run ending with a decent shot.

But in the 34th minute Alex Brosque pounced on a loose through ball, headed ineffectively towards Michael Theoklitos by DeVere. Brosque elegantly chipped Theoklitos and Sydney were back in the game if you closed your eyes and wished real hard.

Shannon Cole tried a lofted shot that failed to dip and then continued his habit of breaking the link in a long chain of Sydney passes.

In the 45th minute a lovely through ball put Murdocca in the Sydney box but Necevski denied him with a great save.

Sydney had been terribly scrappy and needed to settle if they were to be a threat to Brisbane in the second half.

But the second half began badly for Sydney. Following great work by Moriyasu on the left touchline Cazarine missed an easy chance when the ball rebounded off Theoklitos from a fierce Brosque shot.

Erik Paartalu found Broich who hit a good shot deflected for a corner. Foxe was good coming back to take the ball from Murdocca heading for goal.

Ivan Franjic hit a good drive just to the right of goal.

In the 55th minute a Foxe header called a good diving save from Theoklitos. A good Sydney spell was ended by a terrific tackle from Kosta Barbarouses, who continued with a fine run.

Erik Paartalu was very good intercepting a Brosque cross with three team mates waiting in anticipation.

Mark Bridge was angry at himself for blasting wide after Brosque chased hard to retrieve a McFlynn switch into the left corner.

McFlynn was struggling to deliver and his players were following his example. Already on a yellow he needed to be careful and was fortunate when he gave away a free kick on the left touchline.

Ivan Necevski needed to make a great save to deny a Smith header.

A couple of Sydney players - Moriyasu and Rhyan Grant - were starting to look flat. But still Moriyasu had great touch and was brought down playing a one-two into the Brisbane penalty area. Brisbane's clearance fell to McFlynn, who shot just wide of the right post.

Rhyan Grant gave an easy pass away to Brisbane and mercifully for Grant and Sydney Broich executed a similar stuff up.

Thomas Broich was fouled and from the Paartalu free kick Broich volleyed over the Sydney goal.

In the last ten minutes Sydney were struggling to keep Brisbane out; balls were flying across, over and around the Sydney goal.

Another Broich shot was deflected just wide. McKay sent one over the crossbar from a few metres off the goal line.

Terry McFlynn bumbled. Brosque fumbled.

A Paartalu shot deflected off the back of McFlynn and Brisbane had another corner.

Sydney substitute Kofi Danning finally got a long ball but his first touch was inadequate. Brisbane's forward sub, Jean Carlos Solorzano, was having much more fun.

Thomas Broich won another corner but the subsequent shot went wide.

Solorzano created havoc. It was all Brisbane. Paartalu shot low and wide. The whistle blew and Sydney were saved further misery.
