Wellington Phoenix FC - Gold Coast United FC

Friday evening sees two games, with the opener being across the ditch where bouyed by World Cup fever the Phoenix should continue their crowd growth. On the back of that it is hard to see Gold Coast rebounding from their toothless display at home last round. Mark Paston will have grown in confidence with his display in South Africa and goalkeepers thrive on confidence. Although the loss of Jon McKain is huge and his replacement by Jade North is not yet in place, the Phoenix should still be solid at the back. Wellington have firepower, and the signing of young gun Mirjan Pavlovic from Newcastle only adds to their depth - so it will take another fine display by Glen Moss and an on-fire Shane Smeltz and Joel Porter at his best to take home the points to Queensland. My tip Wellington win.

Newcastle Jets FC - Melbourne Heart FC

Heart started like they'd been jumped with a 12 volt battery last week but faded badly under pressure from the Mariners in midfield so this Friday they will need to keep their shape through the game and hope that the Jets spent a lot of their energy trying to overcome Adelaide. Like last weekend it may be the team that has longer to get their act together that triumphs but it should be an attacking game throughout with the newly tight-lipped Brank Culina happy to have his team speak for him on the park. My tip, a score draw.

North Queensland Fury FC - Sydney FC

Come Saturday two things will be answered: have the local community in the Townsville region really got behind their team, and is the excitement put out by Franz Straka's young side last round to be a regular thing. Sydney will be smarting over having been 2-0 up and stuffing it up against Victory last weekend. There are some connections between the clubs in personnel that will add some spice and with Mark Bridge out it will rest on Alex Brosque to stand up and be counted. My tip, an close upset to the home side.

Melbourne Victory FC - Perth Glory FC

Also on Saturday night, both sides, who have real sights on the Premiership, will be up for it. Don't believe those that say Kevin Muscat is past it, he'll be making sure that he has a faultless game, and that is bad news for the Glory strikers. Melbourne's problem is lack of a sharp point up front and they may not be able to bring the close pressure on Perth 'keeper Tando Velaphi. He's a shot stopper and it will take the best long range efforts from Carlos Hernandez or swinging shots from Tom Pondeljak to beat him. My tip, hmmm ... Glory have just too much firepower (but don't write off Victory's guile).

Central Coast Mariners FC - Adelaide United FC

Can the Mariners repeat their HAL3 start run on this Sunday. Back then they got a lead on the field after 2 rounds and went on to the Premiership; but that was a much shorter season. Criticism of the Reds style in last weekend's draw shouldn't mask the fact that Adelaide know how to go away and snatch a win. With Joshua Rose cleared and into the left side for Graham Arnold's side they will look better balanced, and Argentinian Perez may come off the bench to meet Reds returning Flores in midfield. My tip, have to go Central Coast (my family would kill me)! Yellow scarf on!
