The Central Coast Mariners let slip a great chance to defeat league leaders Brisbane Roar in Gosford last night, drawing 3-3 in an enthralling game played between two very good sides.

It is hard to pin down the reason they lost; between two poor defensive marking lapses, the determinaton of the Roar, and some raw deals dealt out by the referee, Peter Green; for they outplayed the prospective Premiers for large slabs of the game.

Central Coast's midfield held key players in check early in the game, slowing the Roar's buildup and allowing some wide attacks to their own flankmen.

It was the Brisbane side who scored first however, with a corner from Thomas Broich picking out the head of Erik Paartalu who was not close enough marked by Alex Wilkinson, and Central Coast gloveman Matt Ryan had come off his line expecing a clear take. The defensive midfielder’s movement was enough to see him out-jump Wilkinson and Ryan, and head home into the right side of the goal from just outside the box. 0-1

A controversial free kick was awarded to the visitors, but Matt Ryan, full of confidence rose to cleanly take his well flight shot.

Oliver Bozanic was back to his best and this was highlighted in the 37th minute when he released striker Adam Kwasnik with a sublime bal through the defence. Kwasnik was able to peel off the shoulder of his marker and steer his shot into the left side of goal across Roar 'keeper Michael Theoklitos who was coming out to cover. Back level 1-1.

The final chance of the half came in the twilight seconds when Patricio Perez curved a free-kick from 30m onto the top angle of the goalposts, and it rebounded to safety.

Two very good first half claims by the Mariners for hand-ball in the first half were dampened but not removed by the TV replays in the media box at half-time.

Just after the re-start the Mariners took the lead. Patricio Perez hit a free kick from the left into the area and in a apparently rehearshed scenario Matt Simon’s quick movement bundled the ball into the net, with what looked like a 'cow-kick'. 2-1

Thomas Broich took responsibility on seeing his side fall behind, and not closed down in range he latched onto the ball from Jean Carlos Solorzano to slam it home past Ryan. 2-2

A run on the left in the 73rd minute by Joshua Rose was brought to a halt by a challenge from the side by Milan Susak. Referee Peter Green had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot, before showing a red card to Susak for a second bookable offence. It was Patricio Perez who stepped up and slotted home the penalty to the Theoklitos's left! 3-2

Inexplicably referee Green saw, but did not punish, persistantly over-aggressive man-handling of Matt Simon by Roar 'keeper Theoklitos. A penalty, and perhaps a red-card, at that point may have killed the vistors' hopes but Green looked, and did not respond. The MRP should pick that up but probably will not.

Brisbane’s unbeaten streak looked like it could be in jeopardy but finding space outside the penalty box in the 79th minute substitute James Meyer looking up with the ball at his feet and un-pressured sent it past Matt Ryan in the Mariners goal from 25m and salvaged a point for the visitors. 3-3 A goal-line clearance by Luke De Vere and a blast over the bar by Kosta Babarousos added to the late drama.

"Tonight it was important to try and give the people of Queensland something to cheer about," Brisbane coach Ange Postecoglou said. "We spoke about it before the game, we wanted to represent the city and the state and put in a massive effort. The boys never give in."

Mariners coach Graham Arnold felt that his side had let an opportunity slip. “It was a fantastic game, but I thought we were the better side and should have gone on to win it,” said Arnold. “Two dead moments killed us tonight which is better to happen tonight than in a semi (final). It was disappointing to concede from a corner and then a really soft throw in. “Overall though I think our performance was fantastic. When the boys are sitting in the dressing room disappointed after a 3-all draw with the team leading the competition it shows how far we’ve come,” said Arnold.
