After numerous pitch inspections by the match officials, the match was delayed by 1 hour 15 minutes due to a deluge of rain sweeping in from the North West; the Central Coast Mariners have taken 1 point away from 'Melbourne Rectangular Stadium'.

The ground was the star of tonight’s match. After copping one of the heaviest downfalls in many months, it held up extremely well, with no balls ever falling short of players. Many scenarios were thrown forward after consultation with Docklands for Saturday, but that was impossible due to new turf being laid. The match could not be played due to the Rugby Union trail match between the new franchise Melbourne Rebels taking on the Canterbury Crusaders. The likely reschedule if the game didn’t go ahead was Sunday at 3:00pm.

A draw here has all but blown the finals chances for the Heart, after having the majority of the chances late in the game. With the Wellington Phoenix one point clear and two games in hand, the Phoenix have all but sealed the sixth spot in the finals with the Heart still a mathematical chance. The Brisbane Roar have now won the Premiers Plate after this result, with Mariners unable to make up the ground to over take them.

The goals came in quick and fast succession in the start of the second half.

The first goal came from the free kick five yards on the wrong side of halfway by Matt Thompson. Thompson put in what looked like a through ball which keeper Matthew Ryan let bounce. The result of letting it bounce, it bounced over his head into the goal after his chase was to no avail.

The Mariners sucker punched within a minute after a first touch cross from Joshua Rose found a free Daniel McBreen who tried to chip Clint Bolton. Bolton than fumbled the ball over his head and McBreen tapped the ball in for the equaliser.

Early in the first half, the Mariners had the bulk of the chances. In the 6th minute, a Michael McGlinchey shoot was humbled through the legs of Heart keeper Clint Bolton, who gallantly dived as the ball slid across the rain soaked pitch. The ball made the line, but just did not cross.

The tide turned in the later stage of the first half to the Melbourne Heart. Gerald Sibon earned a free kick, 20 yards out. He than took the free kick which curved towards the left post and slipped through the hands of keeper Matthew Ryan and went out for a corner.

A major concern for the Mariners is the possible injury to in form striker Matt Simon. He limped off late in the first half after the sliding tackle from Simon Colosimo. It looks like he could be out for the rest of the season.

In what could be a sad end to a celebrated career, Josip Skoko did not come on in the second half due to an injured knee, which will be scanned early tomorrow morning.
