ACT Gatorade Premier League - 2010
BOTN Feature Game - Round 18 Canberra FC are Champions Sunday 29 August, 2010
Canberra FC has been crowned Gatorade Premier League champions for the nineteenth time in emphatic fashion after dismissing Goulburn Strikers 6-0 at Deakin Stadium in their final match of the season.
Canberra FC claimed their nineteenth league championship in some style defeating Goulburn Strikers 6-0 in a one-sided match at Deakin Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Heading into the game knowing that a win would secure the league crown Canberra FC suffered an early scare when Goulburn midfielder Daniel Aliffi was extremely unlucky to see a well-struck scissor kick crash back off the post and to safety with Ben Klug well beaten in goal.
The hosts made the most of this let off and by the half-time interval were well in control of matters thanks to a double from midfield maestro Alex Castro. Castro twice took advantage of scrambles in the Strikers penalty area to bundle the ball into the net and give the home support belief that the title was theirs.
That belief was turned into reality six minutes after the re-start when Danai Gapare made it 3-0 before a three goal burst in six minutes secured the championship in some style.
Firstly Victor Yanes struck the goal of the game lashing a thunderous short into the roof of the net from twenty metres before Castro completed his hat-trick, taking his season tally to fourteen in the process, and Adam Spaleta bagged the sixth as the home team switched to party mode in the final twenty minutes.
Canberra FC now has a home tie with Belconnen United to kick off the finals as they aim to retain the final part of their treble won last term.
Meanwhile Belconnen United ended the regular season with a 2-1 win over Monaro Panthers, a result that has ended the Panthers season, and Cooma Tigers finished third after a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Canberra City. In other matches Tuggeranong United and ANU FC fought out a 0-0 draw while Canberra Olympic beat Woden Valley 4-1.
