Perth Glory moved temporarily moved into third place following their two goals to one defeat of Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium in Round 10 action of the Westfield W-League. A brace by Samantha Kerr was enough to hold off a strong Adelaide side possibly playing their final match on Hindmarsh Stadium.

In one of their better games of the season, Adelaide pushed from the start and certainly had their opporunites. With a little luck they may have even been level before the break, but as with teams near the bottom, rarely do they get the rub of the green.

Their inexperience and lack of quality showed yet again, but unlike a number of their defeats in the past, this time it cost them dearly. For certainly, the Lady Reds were more than just in the game. They caused numerous problems for the Perth side who probably were glad the final whistle came.

Following a tense battle in the midfield that resulted in a few movements towards either goal a little bit of majic from Perth’s captain Collette McCallum after a quarter of an hour had gone was enough to break open the game.

A free-kick from the halfway line was taken quickly by McCallum. It found Kerr running on unchallenged. She trapped the ball with her upper chest before colleying it home past the onrushing Kristi Harvey.

Less than ten minutes later luck was not to be with the Adelaide side. Katrina Gorry raced down the right and sent in a cross towards Racheal Quigley. The forward pushed the ball forward and fell under the attention of Tanya Oxtoby.

Referee Catherine Hofmann chose not to make a decision in favour of the home team when it appeared more likely to come. Certainly her position was not the best and thus she was not convinced that a penalty was the decision.

That set back did not cause the Adelaide team to fall back into their shell as they continued to create chances. Yet, except for a glancing header wide by Christina Papageorgio from a Victoria Balomenos freekick Adelaide did not get a shot off.

The McCallum Kerr combination made them pay with a few minutes left before the break. When Harvey sent a kick out McCallum chipped it back forward. Ashleigh Gunning completely misjudged the flight of the ball allowing Kerr to run on and chip the exposed Harvey.

Adelaide did not give up yet without any real chance on goal for the first period of the second half. Perth threatened occasionaly, yet neither Kerr not her partner Kate Gill could find the target.

Midway through the period Kerr should have completed her hatrick, but after having been put through by Gill, she sent her shot wide. Then immediately at the other end a Donna Cockayne pull back found Balomenos and her first time shot, definitely on target, was cleanly blocked by Oxtoby in her face.

A minute later Papageorgio nearly grabbed Adelaide’s second goal from normal play, but a finger tip save from Tine Cederkvist saw the ball bounce back off the crossbar. The Perth keeper was alert and grabbed the ball before Adelaide could take advantage.

Then with less than twenty minutes to go, Gorry finally got her side on the scoresheet. Racing towards goal she was able to fend off Alexander Singer. Cederkvist came out to clear the ball, but her attempt was blocked by Gorry.

The forutitous rebound meant that Gorry could dribble the ball into the empty net. Given the pressure by Adelaide during that half, the goal was well deserved. It also set up a tense finish to the game.

As the game came towards an exciting finish, Kerr again tried to beat Harvey when she was through on the keeper. But Harvey was ready and saved well from strikers attempt. McCallum also tried her luck from distance, but her shot did not dip.

Adelaide pressed in the final seconds but could not find a way through the Perth defence.
