Sydney United 58 proved too well drilled to allow the new-look Parramatta Eagles to fly on Sunday at Melita Stadium. The visitors went away 1-0 winners through an early opportunists goal by Ante Tomic.

With wholesale changes to the Parramatta squad under new coach Lee Sterrey it would be expected that they will take some time to settle, and it was true of this game.

The home sides' 'keeper, Tom Romic, was under pressure early when Ante Tomic sent in a cross from the left to Steven Hayes. The blonde haired midfielder headed strongly bu to the left of the upright.

However just 3 minutes later Eagle's diminutive Japanese defender Taichi Kojima got into the area but big Michael Cindric went down to block his shot. The ball rolled loose and striker Bruno Privato hit it straight to Vedran Janjetovic in Sydney's goal.

In the 17th minute a chain of errors by the young Eagles side led to a goal against them. A defender attempted to to head a high ball but only managed to head it back toward his own corner post on the right. 'Keeper Tom Romic was quick to get out to cover the ball, but his clearance up field was loose. It fell to Ante Tomic, who seeing the keeper racing back to his goal, astutely lobbed it into the net from 40m. 0-1

One minute later a Ben Vidaic speculator from similar distance just cleared the crossbar.

The Eagles were turning over possession too often, but Bruno Privato did get forward into the area in the 25h minute with two defenders closing however his shot was weak and didn't trouble the 'keeper.

Akiyoshi Saito and Luka Glavas both had attempts for their respective sides but the bext chance before half-time had Bruno Privato on the end of a free kick by Graziano Trimboli. Alas his volley was weak and went tin to the waiting arms of Sydney's custodian.

Some good interchanging in the 49th minute by Glavas and Vidaic ended with a snap volley, which went over the bar. Four minutes later Vidaic hit a low shot that the 'keeper parried and Glavas followed it up with a shot that was blocked.

The Eagles were hardly able to mount a danger, whilst Vidaic, Hayes, and Glavas all had chances. In the 79th minute Tomic made a great save from another 40m lob.

It looked likely that last year's Grand Finalists Sydney United 58 would go ahead, but Eagles coach Lee Sterrey brought on young speedster Hassan Daramy who gave them a new dimension - holding possession and making incursive runs on the right. Import Mark O'Rielly almost capitalised on their renewed penetration when he sent a dipping shot over the bar, and Saito hit a volley from 25m that curled just over.

A fair result in the end for Jean-Paul De Marigny's men, but the Eagles showed that Sterrey has something to work on.
