Blacktown Football Park played host to the first ‘Blacktown’ derby for 2012 as the newly promoted Blacktown Spartans FC went down 0-1 to 10-man Blacktown City FC in Round 4 action on Saturday evening.

City were on 5pts in 5th place, and Spartans on 4pts in 7th coming into the game so who ever won would have bragging rights for the District. The game was at the Spartans new home of Blacktown Football Park in Eastern Road, Rooty Hill, across the road from the Olympic complex.

It is an impressive set-up with new facilities for the teams and spectators down one flank and a banked hill with bench seating along the other. The car parks were full and there was a crowd of over 450 in for the spectacle under lights.

The game started with both teams showing that they were ready to 'have a go', but they also were very ready to get lots of men back behind the ball quickly when any attack built.

It was no suprise then that the first real chance arose in the 9th minute when the Blacktown City's Ray Miller got in a stinging shot from the left that rebounded to Japanese import Yuchi Yamauchi whose shot was palmed away for the corner by Spartans 'keeper and captain Carlos Salidarre.

In the 18th minute Ryuji Miyazawa sent a precision pass right to an unmarked Yamauchi but the diminutive striker hurried and dragged the shot across goal and past the left post.

Two minutes later Spartans conceded a free kick 30m out on the right but Matthew Lewis's curling ball could only be headed wide by Patrick Gatt, but the play was end to end, with a few minutes later 'Demons' 'keeper Brody Crane forced to go come out to make a double save off Louis Bozanic and Chris Gomez.

The Spartans started getting back into the game through first Daniel Wells, then former Demon Sean Mitchell, then Steven Veleski, bringing out the best in custodian Brody Crane.

As it looked like the sides would go into the break without score, the Japanese duo struck for City. Yuichi Yamauchi sent a shot that Salidarre parried, but it fell loose in the area and Ryuji Miyazawa was on hand to knock it in. 0-1

Not that the goal ended the first half drama, with former Gold Coast United man Daniel Bragg making a two-footed challenge on Nathan Millgate in an area giving referee Kris Griffiths Jones little option but to flash the red card at Bragg.

After the break Demon's coach Mark Crittenden took off Yamauchi and restored his midfield with David Cain, sitting back to asborb pressure and playing off the break.

The Spartans did not adjust enought to capitalise on their man advantage, being wary of the pace that City could break.

It was substitute Cain who had the best chance when in the 67th minute he got a free header at the edge of the area off a Miller lob, and the ball spun onto the base of the right upright, and away.

Mid-half the Spartans had a spell where they got numbers forward but three half-hearted chances did not produce a goal.

City re-gained control of the game and although they had a missed chance were looking the more likely.

Late in regular time the Spartans through pure effort had a few chances, but substitute Lord Darkoh was unable to head Sean Mitchell’s cross, and then Chris Bedzo headed over the bar.

4 minutes of stoppage gave the home side some late purpose, but Lord Darkoah found Crane too alert to his run into the area, and pushing forward Daniel Wells was unable to put in a telling header.

As derbies go it was entertaining for the crowd but showed the class of the City side over the hard working Spartans.
