Brisbane Roar has convincingly beaten Melbourne Heart 5-1 at John Cain Memorial Park today thanks to strong performances by Nicolas Fitzgerald and Matthew Thurtell.

Despite Heart being boosted by the presence of overage players including Simon Colosimo, Paul Reid and Maycon they failed to trouble their bigger-bodied opponents.

Roar had the first chance of the game in the second minute after a blunder in defence gave Matthew Thurtell the ball inside the box. However his shot took a deflection before hitting the crossbar and being cleared for a corner.

In just the eighth minute Roar had the first goal of the match. Nicholas Fitzgerald won the ball outside the box, deep on the left side. Working his way back up to the top of the box he fired a powerful shot into the bottom left corner giving Sebastian Mattei no chance.

Two minutes later Heart had their first solid chance of the game with Stipo Andrijasevic receiving a long ball in the box. However his shot was comfortable stopped by Andrew Redmayne in goals.

In the 20th minute Roar almost doubled their lead when Fitzgerald cross the ball in low to the near post. Thurtell managed to just reach the cross but his sliding shot went wayward.

Maycon had a great opportunity for Heart in the 29th minute, after Billy Liolios put a fantastic aerial through-ball for the Brazilian to run onto. However Maycon's shot blasted way over the crossbar.

Then in the 37th Heart was practically handed a goal after Luke Brattan passed the ball back to Maycon who was one on one with the keeper. But again he failed to beat Redmayne leaving a relieved Brattan. It would prove to be a bad day for Maycon as he blundered chance after chance.

Paul Reid tried his luck just before the half time whistle ,the veteran Heart player taking an ambitious shot from long range. However it did not trouble the keeper.

Heart came out with a purpose in the second half and increased their pressure. Maycon again had a chance in the 49th minute, shooting from just inside the box. But yet again Redmayne had no difficulty saving.

The same minute Roar managed to double their lead after Kofi Danning crossed the ball into Thurtell who was free in the box. Thurtell turned and finished comfortably past Mattei.

Heart pulled one back in the 63rd minute through Craig Goodwin. After running onto a long ball from Brodie Patterson, Goodwin beat his man and then comfortably slot the ball past Redmayne in the near post.

In the 71st minute Roar had a chance to get their two goal lead back after Thurtell beat Josh Groenewald in a physical battle to get to the ball inside the box. Despite ending up one-on-one with the keeper, Thurtell failed to beat Mattei who pulled off a great save.

But it would only take two minutes for Roar to regain their two goal lead after captain Chris Bush put a great cross into the box, finding George Lambadaridis who finished into an open goal.

Then just a minute later Roar struck again through Matthew Thurtell. The number nine winning the ball just outside the box before finishing comfortably past Mattei.

Heart had a chance to reduce the deficit in the 77th minute after they earned a free-kick just outside the box. However Josh Groenewald's shot blasted way over the goal, wasting a decent opportunity.

The 30 degree heat seemed to take its toll on the game as both teams slowed down for the rest of the second half.

But in the 94th minute Tomislav Cirjak finished Roar's day in spectacular style. Shooting from well outside the box, beating Mattei and smashing into the top left corner.
