Despite a week of heavy rain on the Central Coast of NSW, this match was played on a surprisingly good pitch, with very few indications of surface water, and both teams performed well in a very fast entertaining game which saw the Mariners increase their lead at their top of the NY-League table.

The match started at a very fast rate with both teams indicating that they were out for the three points. As early as the second minute the Mariners had an opportunity to open the scoring when Justin Hayward broke through the Brisbane defence but a last minute tackle by Jason Geria saved the day.

The game flowed up and down the pitch and in the next fifteen minutes there were chances to score at each end, but both goalkeepers were in top form and were thwarting any danger.

Kwabena Appiah-Kubi and Mitchell Duke for the Mariners, and Kofi Danning and Luke Brattan for Brisbane, were looking sharp and in all their respective team's attacks.

At the 34th minute mark, a bad mix up between Brisbane goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne and a defender, saw the first goal of a double by Duke. Redmayne took a short goal kick and the ball was returned to him by his defence, But, as quick as a flash in came Duke to intercept the back pass and cunningly lob the ball past the stranded goalkeeper to open the scoring.

Harsh words were obviously said in the Roar dressing room at half time, as Brisbane started the second half with intent, and for about ten minutes the Mariners defence was under siege, but captain James Oates was marshalling his troops well, and Brisbane could not breach the quick tackling youngsters in blue and yellow!

Substitutes were made galore, including the Roar goalkeeper, but Matthew Acton showed he was just as in form as his predecessor Redmayne, with a brilliant save from a vicious shot from Brad Porter that looked goal bound all the way.

The substitutes made no difference to the attitude of either team as they continued to make goal scoring opportunities.

Roar came again in the last ten minutes throwing everything at the young Mariners, but they held firm and to their joy they made a break into, the Brisbane half. The ball went to Jordan Farina who put a perfect pass to Duke and his clinical finish from twelve metres, with literally the last kick of the game, put the game out of Brisbane's reach.

A jubilant Mariners coach, Tony Walmsley praised his men for their hard fought win.

"Brisbane are the best team we have met this season, and we came prepared for a tough match. Our defence was brilliant and Mitchell Duke's two goals showed why he has been given a contract." Walmsley said. "The future looks good for the club with talent like you saw tonight!"
