Brisbane Roar has defeated Melbourne Victory in a convincing 5-1 victory at Kingston Heath today.

It would be a tale of the bigger and taller Roar overpowering and out-playing their younger counterparts with Victory finishing with five players born in 1995 on the pitch.

While disappointed with the result, Coach Darren Davies described the game as a “great learning experience” as Victory focuses toward developing their talented youngsters in the Y-League.

“I don’t mind us conceding goals or making mistakes as long as we learn along the way. In a year or two years these are going to be best players who are playing for the Melbourne Victory’s first team, never mind the youth team,” said Davies.

Roar held the majority of possession for the opening few moments. However a mistake by Roar goalkeeper Matthew Acton to clear the ball allowed James Jeggo to chip the ball in to give Victory the opener in the 9th minute.

But Roar’s persistence began to pay dividends in the 26th minute when a scramble in Victory’s area led to an own goal by Adam Nakic.

Two minutes later a brilliant corner saw Roar vice-captain Kenneth Dougall place the ball perfectly for Lachlan Jackson to header it into the back of the net.

Then in the 33rd minute Nicholas Fitzpatrick set up a brilliant Chris Bush cross that was comfortably put away by Tomislav Cirjak, doubling Roar’s lead.

The obvious issue of Victory’s weak right wing was fixed as Luke O’Dea, who was struggling with a back injury, was subbed for John Buceto just before the second half.

Roar opened the second half as they had left the first with Dougall pin-pointing another corner towards captain Chris Bush who buried the ball home in the 47th minute.

Victory began to become more competitive as the second half wore on. However poor first touches and finishing left them struggling for a consolation goal as Hernan Espindola could not pop a brilliant James Jeggo cross past the Roar keeper.

Roar supporters may be worried after a late tackle by Christohpher Cristaldo injured Luke Brattan, who played the last 20 minutes in the senior team’s draw on Saturday night.

George Lambadaridis sealed the victory for Roar with a brilliant free kick, smashing it into the top left corner past Victory keeper Dowisha in the closing moments.

Victory now travel to Central Coast to try earn their first win of the season this Friday against the Mariners.
