Melbourne Heart has defeated Newcastle Jets 3-1 in a solid victory at John Cain Memorial Park today.

John Aloisi praised his senior players saying he was “really happy with their efforts” in what he thought overall was “not a bad performance”.

The Heart dominated play from the very start of the match with Rutger Worm scoring in just the second minute of play.

Kristian Sarkies, whose pin-point free kick set up Heart’s first goal, would continue to prove a nuisance to the Jets throughout the day.

Heart had numerous chances during the first half of the game to increase their lead, however they struggled to capitalise.

Jets goalkeeper Jack Duncan failed to clear the ball effectively letting Stipo Andrijasevic cross to an open Brodie Patterson in the middle of the box. However the number eight missed wide in the sixth minute. Then only a minute later the shaky Duncan was drawn out of his box only to have Heart Captain Craig Goodwin failing to put away Worm’s through ball.

The onslaught continued with what looked a brilliant through ball by Patterson and finished by Andrijasevic deemed only just offside by officials.

However the Jets managed to steady themselves in a goal well against the run of play in the 23rd minute. An Andrew Hoole cross finished well by Labinot Haliti.

Opportunities for both teams dried up for the remainder of the first half with the frustration leading to some rash tackles and a yellow card to Jets player Tiago Calvono.

Heart had one final chance in the 43rd minute where Andrijasevic failed to finish another great Sarkies cross.

Both teams began the second half competitively and the Jets almost stole the lead with Scott Pettit failing to capitalise on a defensive blunder by Kristian Konstantinidis in the 49th minute.

John Aloisi made three substitutions in the 59th minute bring on Zac Walker, Josh Groenewald and DUsan Bosnjak, a move that would prove very rewarding.

Just five minutes later Groenewald smashed home another low cross by Sarkies to give Heart back the lead.

While still competitive, the Jets gave away any hope of a win when Mario Simic was sent off for two yellow cards in the 70th minute.

Despite Simic initially only receiving a yellow card for his holding on Goodwin, referee Brenton Hayward did not like Simic’s dissent and sent the senior player off.

Heart’s final goal came from the sheer hardwork of Billy Liolios. With the young midfielder managing to fend off a tackle by Kyle Ewart and then place a great through ball for substitute Zac Walker to finish nicely into the bottom right corner.

Despite having the game sealed Heart received three yellow cards in the last 13 minutes of play. With Sarkies, Groenewald and Bosnjak’s tackles deemed to be too aggressive.

Jets had a last minute chance in the 88th minute for a consolation goal however Hoole failed to take advantage of the scramble in Heart’s area.

The Heart are now three from four as they travel to the Gold Coast next week and try to contest top spot in the league.
