Round draw

Canberra United FC v Newcastle Jets FC

Saturday 19 November 2011 - McKellar Park, Canberra - Local kick-off: 3pm (Live: ABC TV)

An intriguing match-up awaits in Canberra with the league leaders hosting the dynamic, but erratic, Newcastle Jets. Local fans, as well as television viewers across the nation, are set for a football treat in a contest shaping as one of the highlights of the season. Both teams are full of attacking intent and Australia’s best two goalkeepers – Lydia Williams and Melissa Barbieri – seem set for a busy time.

Canberra, on the back of an unprecedented four-match winning streak, have raced to a five-point lead at the summit and are playing with ever-increasing confidence. The attacking trio of Michelle Heyman, Taryn Hemmings and Ashleigh Sykes, backed by the midfield guile of Caitlin Munoz, are creating an enormous number of goalscoring opportunities each week. Remarkably a win here will go close to sealing a finals berth, with just 15 points needed last year to seal fourth.

Newcastle will arrive in the nation’s capital on the back of three very different performances. An opening demolition of Adelaide United, gave way to a late comeback victory against Brisbane, before the Jets crashed 4-1 at home last weekend against a rampant Sydney FC. Star forward Lisa De Vanna, who came off at half-time following a heavy collision with Sydney goalkeeper Allison Lipsher, is expected to return to the fray. An intriguing sub-plot will be the return of Jets’ midfield ace Emily van Egmond to her former home ground.

Perth Glory FC v Brisbane Roar FC

Saturday 19 November 2011 - 6PR Stadium, Perth - Local kick-off: 4pm

Brisbane face their second testing road trip in as many weeks following last Saturday’s hard-fought win in Adelaide. Perth, conversely, enjoyed a weekend off having secured their maiden win in the previous round. The pair are only separated by a single point on the table leaving reigning champions Roar with little scope for error on their visit to the west.

The Glory have this week been boosted by a third well-credentialed international import with the arrival of Norway midfielder Lisa-Marie Woods, who is set to line-up alongside New Zealander Emma Kete and English defender Katie Holtham. Woods is a 27-year-old attacking midfielder who was originally named in Norway’s 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup squad only for injury to force her withdrawal.

The Roar too have cavalry on the way with Matildas pair Kim Carroll and Aivi Luik returning from their club commitments in Denmark; the former a team-mate of Woods at Fortuna Hjorring. However, reigning Australian women’s player of the year Elise Kellond-Knights recently suffered a serious knee injury while also playing for Fortuna and will miss the entire Westfield W-League campaign. Goalkeeper Casey Dumont also returns after a one-week suspension with the Roar defence takes on a more familiar look.

Perth Glory squad: 1. Mackenzie ARNOLD (gk), 3. Carys HAWKINS, 4. Erika ELZE, 5. Shannon MAY, 6. Katarina JUKIC, 7. Sadie LAWRENCE, 8. Tanya OXTOBY (c), 9. Katie HOLTHAM, 10. Jaymee GIBBONS, 11. Melbourne Victory FC v Adelaide United FC

Saturday 19 November 2011 - Veneto Club, Bulleen - Local kick-off: 5pm

Following two consecutive 2-1 defeats Melbourne Victory will be desperate to return to the winners circle so as to not lose touch with the frontrunners. Adelaide too will have a similar mindset, having also suffered consecutive defeats by the same 2-1 scoreline.

Melbourne will have Australia U-17 coach Vicki Linton back on the bench after her two-week sojourn in China with the national team. The Victory created a significant number of chances last weekend against leaders Canberra, and could easily have taken something from the game with more clinical finishing. The return of midfield dynamo Katrina Gorry last weekend was a major boost for the Victory and her combination going forward with striker Jodie Taylor could prove to be key.

The visitors still have a lengthy winless run hanging over their heads but, in truth, it is a statistic that belies their competitive start to the campaign. Even a small dose of luck in front of goal could easily have seen the Lady Reds collect their first point over the past fortnight against either Perth Glory on the road, or Brisbane Roar at home. United’s squad will be boosted by return of their Australian U-17 trio - Emma Checker, Grace Henry and Ebony Philcox.

Melbourne Victory squad: 1.Brianna DAVEY (gk), 2.Rebekah STOTT, 3. Maika RUYTER-HOOLEY, 4. Kendall FLETCHER, 5. Danielle JOHNSON, 7. Stephanie CATLEY, 8. Ashley BROWN, 9. Georgie KOUTROUVELIS, 10.
