Canberra United FC are the Westfield W-League Champions for Season 4, with an enthralling 3-2 win over Brisbane Roar FC in front of 2,512 fans at a packed and warm Mackellar Stadium in Canberra today.

Going through the season undefeated, it was 'the greens' that went ahead first and never went behind in a very tough battle - which was a credit to the standard of the league even when wearly legs told toward the end.

Within the first ten minutes both sides had chances. Firstly Grace Gill for Canberra having Roar 'keeper Casey Dumont smother her ball into the box, then Joanne Burgess cut a ball into the area for Tamaka Butt, who headed over.

Michelle Heyman did the same only moments later, then Lana Harch laid on along ball to Tameka Butt whose angled shot was taken well by the home-side's custodian Lydia Williams.

Then Heyman struck. Ashleigh Sykes lobbed a ball into the path of Heyman, who powered toward the line beating Kim Carroll, and angled her shot from the right past Casey Dumont, in the 11th minute. 1-0

Canberra ran to a 2-0 lead in the 18th minute when Grace Gill pushed a ball down the left to Michelle Heyman, again free, whose cross with Clare Polkinghorne closing, found Ashleigh Sykes at the far post and she ably side-footed it in. 2-0

The home side were dominant but a game-ending injury to Joanne Burgess not only brought Emily Gielnik onto the field but broke up the momentum that Canberra had at that point. A quick ball down the left to Tameka Butt and her cross from out wide on the left was met by a lurking Gielnik - her first touch of th game ending with a goal as she blasted it in from close range. 2-1

Both 'keepers were kept busy until the half-time break as the game settled into a high-tempo contest.

In the 58th minute Canbera extended their lead with Grace Gill's corner from the right finding Michelle Heyman rising high at the back post and steering her header into the net. 3-1

The Roar never give up, and they pushed high to try to get back into the game. Tameka Butt was impeded in the area by Nicole Sykes and awarded a penalty. She cooly stepped up and put it away. 3-2

Although Gielnik and Butt provided a threat it was Canberra who had the best chance late - Heyman headed uncharacteristicly way over off a Sykes cross.

The final whistle and the parochial Canberra crowd rejoiced at their first Championship.

Player of the match Michelle Heyman took a brace from this game to take her season total to 15 goals from 12 games.
