Brisbane Roar have moved to clear second on the Westfield W-League ladder prior to the last round with a 3-1 win over the Newcastle Jets in a fast paced but entertaining game at Adamstown Oval on Saturday afternoon, in front of a good crowd on a lovely day.

With a chance of the finals Newcastle coach Clayton Zane set out a team that looked conservative, while the visitors were at full strength and perhaps smarting from their relative struggles this season.

The first quarter of an hour was end to end arm-wrestling stuff, with both sides trying to wrest control of the midfield.

It was 16 minutes in before the first shot, from Catherine Cannuli who hit a shot on the run from 25m, but Newcastle's 'keeper Melissa Barbieri was down to smother it.

Using the full width of the pitch the Roar were getting on top of the young Jets side, and two minutes later Lana Harch got wide down the right and sent a perfectly floating ball in the sea-breeze for the oncoming Tameka Butt but Barbieri was out too fast. She cleared but the collission kept her grounded for attention for some minutes.

In the 28th minute Brisbane struck first, with a ball chipped over the defence finding Lana Harch, who looped the ball over the advancing Barbieri. 0-1

While the Roar looked dangerous everytime they went forward, Newcastle was struggling to get out of midfield and when they did they had no width and were relying on De Vanna to run a lone role up front. When it did work, she was closed down by 3 or 4 orange shirts. In the 34th minute for some variation Emily van Egmond lifted a ball over to Nicola Borger, who rushed her shot and blasted high!

There was a flurry just before the break with first Butt putting pressure on Barbieri, and then at the other end the Jets got a rare corner on the right. Stacey Day sent it into Monnique Kofoed who managed to shoot but it rebounded off the upright.

The hopes of the local fans lifted in the 53rd minute when out of the blue a goal came. Linda O'Neill, drifting again central, for once got onto the ball with space in front of her. With De Vanna hemmed in by three defenders her option was to hit a shot into the wind which dipped and came off the cross-bar and down. By now, De Vanna has scroched up the pitch to be there and in a scramblewith the 'keeper was able to knock it in. 1-1

15 minutes of Orange fury rolled out. Firstly Alleway got forward on the left, and angled a shot that Barbieri was able to handle ok, then Clare Polkinhorne was allowed to stroll up the other flank, and seeing young substitute Emily Gielnik angling her run, she sent the ball through the defence for Gielnik to pick up on the other side, and steadying the ball her second touch of the game was to bulge the net! 1-2

Having rung in subtitutions Clayton Zane now allowed his sde to use width and press forward looking for a goal. O'Neill and then De Vanna had chances, and Emily van Egmond was seeking to break up the Roar's structure at the back.

In the 76th minute the Roar steadied themseves enough for Vedrana Popovic to get forward and send a shot goalward. Jets custodian Barbieri launced herself full-length to the right to save.

With the final Jets substitution they started to press again, but as the stoppage time board was put down, Gielnik pounced on a deflected clearance from the Newcastle defence and then netted from 15m to give Brisbane a well-earned 3-1 win, despite Tara Andrews hitting the crossbar at the other end.

The Brisbane side had just been too organised and wanted it more than the Jets, who only changed tactics and came out of their shell in the last 20.
