Newcastle Jets FC 1

Melbourne Victory bounced back from a loss away to Brisbane last week with a solid 2-1 win over Newcastle Jets at Simonds Stadium. Captain Jodie Taylor was the toast of the team again as she scored a brace to lead Melbourne to victory.

The home team started the brighter of both sides with Taylor springing the offside trap with only five minutes on the clock. However, the returning Melissa Barbieri was equal to the task, pulling off a fine block in goal.

The Jets defenders were finding it hard to stop the early Victory attacks and yet another one got through as Caitlin Friend found strike partner Taylor with an incisive through ball in the 11th minute. Unfortunately, she was fractionally offside and the referee brought play back.

A minute later, Friend found herself with the ball wide on the right, bombing down the flank before cutting the ball back sharply into the penalty area. Barbieri was well beaten and Taylor finished with aplomb from point blank range, but the lineswoman was flagging for offside. It was a puzzling decision for Friend had run into an advanced position with the ball, with Taylor arriving late into the box, but the referee decided to chalk off the effort.

It was not to be the last time during the game as Victory were repeatedly denied by the offside flag in a dominating opening spell. Frustration was starting to show, and Amy Jackson was booked for kicking the ball away after an offside call in the 21st minute. They were almost made to rue their failure to take advantage as Newcastle scored with their first shot on target.

Almost against the run of play, Jets midfielder Nicola Bolger made the most of Rebekah Stott's failure to clear the ball from defence, blasting the ball past Brianna Davey in the Melbourne goal.

Heads dropped as the goal went in, but it was to Victory's credit that the girls were soon back on task. Taylor finally opened the scoring following some good work from Katrina Gorry on the right wing.

Newcastle were denied two penalty appeals within five minutes in the second half, before Taylor put Melbourne in front with her second goal in the 65th minute. Her persistence in chasing down Alexandra Hyunh caused the Newcastle defender to make a hash of her attempted header back to her keeper. Taylor knocked the ball onto an onrushing Barbieri, before slotting home the rebound to win the tie for Victory.

There were more chances for the home side to kill off the tie, but Kendall Fletcher and Laura Spiranovic failed to take their chances, the former knocking the ball wide while off balance after finding herself unmarked at the far post. There was some inspired goaltending from Davey too, as she spectacularly sat on the ball to save a goal after a point blank snapshot in the 68th minute.

Newcastle threw caution to the wind as they chased the game, bringing on the exciting Tara Andrews for defender Hyunh in the 84th minute, but it was to little avail.
