Brisbane Roar FC 1
(Emily Gielnik 90'+1)

Melbourne Victory came agonisingly close to a win against Brisbane Roar at Simonds Stadium, but were ultimately denied as a late equaliser from supersub Emily Gielnik grabbed the visitors a share of the points.

Victory thought they had won it with an 87th minute Kendall Fletcher header, but the Roar had other ideas as they laid siege to the Melbourne goal in the closing minutes. The pressure ultimately paid off as Gielnik pounced from close range to beat Brianna Davey, who had been superb between the sticks up to that point.

It was the visitors who were in the ascendancy early on, as Tameka Butt and Catherine Cannuli repeatedly ran at the Victory defence, but an end product was lacking, as the Butt's shot from Cannuli's dangerous cross cannoned off the crossbar in only the 3rd minute with Davey well beaten.

Indeed, the usually ultra-reliable Melbourne goalkeeper looked a little shaky early on as she flapped at another cross a minute later, but her defence bailed her out on that occasion as Brisbane failed to capitalise.

The home side suffered an injury scare in the 16th minute as Stephanie Catley went down clutching her ankle after rolling it while trying to stop the ball, but was able to continue after treatment on the sidelines.

While the forwards had trouble shaking off their markers within sight of goal, the midfielders had all to do as possession switched regularly in the middle of the park. Victory's Katrina Gorry sent Aivi Luik flying head over heels with a strong bodycheck and the referee had no hesitation in flashing her the yellow card in the 29th minute.

A succession of corners to Brisbane failed to produce a goal, as Ashley Brown went close at the other end, her awkward floated cross-shot proving tricky for Brisbane with Casey Dumont electing to tip it away for a corner.

It was by no means a boring contest at this point, but shots on target were far and few between, with both keepers relatively untested. Dumont was finally called into action in the 63rd minute, having to make a smart diving save to her left to deny Jodie Taylor who had found space for a shot.

Maika Ruyter-Hooley saw yellow for a lunge from behind on Cannuli three minutes later, with the Brisbane player unable to continue. This signalled the ominous introduction of Emily Gielnik, as Brisbane looked to step up their attacking efforts.

However, it was Melbourne who went ahead from a set-piece 12 minutes from time. Brown elected to take a corner kick from the left and Kendall Fletcher rose highest at the far post to send a bullet header into Dumont's net.

Brisbane drove forward with time ticking over, as Melbourne desperately held on. Danielle Johnson was excellent in defence as she had been all game long, but the visitors finally struck in the 1st minute of injury time to level the scores. Claire Polkinghorne's struck a sweet cross into the box and Gielnik got to it before Davey to knock home the equaliser.

Victory were then denied appeals for a late penalty as Taylor went down in the box, before the referee finally called time on an intriguing contest.
