Central Coast Mariners FC will go into their 4th Grand Final in 8 years after a solid 1-0 win over Melbourne Victory FC at Gosford on Sunday evening.

Starting fresh with only 3 of the team that started against Guizhou Renhe in the AFC Champions League in China on Tuesday night the home side looked to cut off supply through Marcos Flores to their front men in Archie Thompson and Marco Rojas.

After a tentative start for the first 15 minutes the Mariners had the better of play through the first half, with the visitors starved of possession in the final third. It was notable then when Marco Rojas got free wide down the right and cut a ball across for Archie Thompson by 'keeper Mat Ryan was alert to the threat and was out quickly to cut it out.

Reward came for the Mariners when in the 42nd minute Bernie Ibini-Isei maintained possession as he battled through the Victory defence. Seeing an opening inside he slipped the ball to Daniel McBreen, with space, who took a few strides and blasted the ball past Nathan Coe in the Melbourne goal. 1-0

The Victory battled hard after the break, with Thompson getting free on the left but hitting a weak shot stratight to Mat Ryan.

Indeed it looked like the Mariners who would extend their lead, with Ibini-Isei and substitute Mitchell Duke testing but not defeating the Malbourne defence.

A red card to Nick Montgomery in stoppage time was not enough to turn the tide, and the vocal crowd showed their appreciation for a 4th tilt at the Toilet Seat, and an ACL berth for next season. Will it be the Mariners year?

Arnold said defeating Tony Popovic’s Western Sydney Wanderers would be a tough task for his side, but his men would enter the contest well prepared. “Western Sydney Wanderers are going to be a huge challenge for us. We’re going to have to be at the top of our game and no doubt Tony is taking down his notes with Ante Milicic and will look at the video of us. We will work on what our strengths are and we’ll worry about ourselves and we’ll try and nullify Western Sydney’s strengths.”
