Central Coast Mariners Youth carried their good form from last season into the new 2012/13 season with a hard fought win against Newcastle Jets at the new Mariners Centre Of Excellence ground last Sunday morning.

Both teams carried a sprinkling of first grade players, mainly to give them match practice following injuries, but there were many new young faces playing in the National Youth league for the first time, and their performances augured well for the future at each club.

The match was very competitive in the early stages - until Troy Hearfield made a burst down the right hand flank on the fifteenth minute mark, crossed the ball into the Jets penalty area for Tomislav Cirjak to run into the box and fired a low shot into the net for the opening goal.

The Mariners kept up the pressure and eight minutes later Cirjak returned the compliment with a cross in the Jet's penalty area and Adam Kwasnik added to the score with a delicate header which left Jets' goalie, Jack Duncan, stranded.

Mariners continued to control operations for the remainder of the first half and the Jets were left to try long shots at goal that were mainly missed well of target or straight at Justin Pasfield the Mariners goalie.

Jets came out a different team in the second half and immediately took control. Two minutes after the break Mitchell Oxborrow picked up a loose ball on the edge of the Mariners penalty area and coolly lobbed the ball into the left corner of the net for the Jets opening goal.

The Jets continued their good work attacking the Mariners goal but Zachary Anderson was leading his co-defenders well and urging them on to better things and Jets started to ease off the pressure. The customary rush of substitutes was made about the sixty minute mark and the game much more even and slowed as players started to show tiredness. Except for a few attacks by either team it mainly became a mid-field battle.

With ten minutes to go, Troy Hearfield was adjudged to have impeded Kale Bradbury in the Mariners penalty area and referee Stephen Lucas awarded the Jets a penalty kick. Marco Jesic took the kick which was saved by Pasfield. Jesic followed up and shot a second time but Pasfield was again equal to the challenge

Neither team looked like adding to the score during the last ten minutes, and the Mariners ran out winners in a close game.

Mariners coach, John McLafferty was naturally pleased with the result in the first competition match of the season but stated that more hard work need to be done to continue last season's success. "We will be working on our defensive system, especially the transition from defence to attack, we must be much quicker in this area" added McLafferty.

The Mariners next Youth game is against Melbourne Heart away in Melbourne on Sat 27 October, followed by Sydney FC at The Centre Of Excellence on Sunday 4 November, with a 10.30am kick off.
