Central Coast Mariners have thrown down the Premiers gauntlet to the challenging pack led by Melbourne Victory, with a comprehensive 5-0 drubbing of an an inexperienced Western Sydney Wanderers selection at a baking Cook Park, St Marys this afternoon.

With the temperature over 38C at kick-off and not dropping noticeably the teams were allowed drink and cool-down breaks every 15 minutes - somewhat adding to the agony of the Wanderers fans and players in this western Wanderland, and the game never got into high-tempo.

Youth team member but first grader Mitchell Duke got into the action early for the visitors, timing his run nicely to collect an over the top ball, but his fierce shot was deflected by Wanderers defender

In the 11th minute a quick ball was played wide to Brad McDonald who made a run down the left line and crossed square to an un-marked Daniel Bragg, who still had his work to steer the ball through a group of players and past the talented Wanderers custodian Jerrard Tyson. 0-1

The Wanderers were not without their chances. Mark Cindric hit a shot on target wich deflected just over the crossbar in the 26th minute. The Mariners pressure however told when Anthony Caceres challenged for a ball in the area 4 minutes later and it bounced off him and up and over the advancing Tyson. 0-2

In the 36th minute Jake McGing hit a scorching shot on target but it was straight at Justin Pasfield in the Mariners goal.

Within minutes of the resumption after half-time it was a series of errors by the Wanderers defence that led to the thrid goal. Jayden Koulizakis hit an aimless pass infield after the keeper had put him under pressure with his clearance. It was robbed by Mithell Duke and passed out to the left where a running Brad McDonald directed it past substitute 'keeper Thomas Manos. 0-3

Despite the heat the visitors piled on the pressure. Mitchell Duke got a reward for heaps on selfless work up front - on one of his trademark diagonal runs he received the ball, outpacing his markers and slotted it over the diving Western Sydney 'keeper. 0-4

Icing on the cake in the 87th minute when in a similar move he out-ran two defenders and steered the ball to the left of the hapless gloveman. 0-5

A convincing win by the classy Coast side, and a lesson for Trevor Morgan's young charges.
