at Mariners Centre of Excellence, Tuggerah

Central Coast Mariners FC 1
(Brad McDonald 70)
lost to
Perth Glory FC
(Slobodan Vulin 5, Adrian Zahra 54, Ndumba Makeche 84')

The Mariners lost their second game in succession at Tuggerah on Saturday morning, and consequently lost their equal top position on the competition table, with Melbourne Victory taking a three point lead following their win over Adelaide United later in the day.

The home team were shocked at the initial onslaught shown by Perth who were positioned seventh on the table. Perth were faster, more direct and were completely outplaying the Mariners, and it took them just under five minutes to open the scoring with a goal from Slobodan Vulin, following great work from Adrian Zahra.

It was eleven minutes before the Mariners could muster an attack on the Perth goal. Perth still had most of the play however, with Zahra and Jacob Collard causing all sorts of trouble for the Mariner's defence.

Mariners slowly worked themselves into the game and made a number of scoring opportunities, but poor finishing from Daniel Bragg and Brad McDonald, and some resolute goalkeeping from Jordan Franken, resulted in no more goals at half time.

Perth repeated their initial charge straight after half time, and nine minutes after the break Zahra scored Perth's second goal which was just reward for his first half performance.

Substitutions were made by both teams and the match became a very even affair with both teams attacking at will.

Twenty minutes from full time McDonald made a mazy run through the Perth defence and gave the Mariners hope with a well taken low shot past Franken into the corner of the net.

Mariners lifted and for a change the Perth goal was under continued attack, but the equaliser just would not come.

Six minutes from full time Perth attacked down the left hand flank and Ndumba Makeche shot at goal. His attempt was blocked by substitute goalie Daniel Sadaka and rebounded to Makeche. His second attempt bounced of a defender into the net for Perth's third goal.

Makeche could have doubled his personal tally when Perth were awarded a penalty kick in added time, but his attempt from the spot went wide.

With two matches in the Youth League competition remaining it is going to be hard for the Mariners to retain their Premiership won last year. They play leaders Melbourne Victory in the last match of the season at Tuggerah on February 24, and with a vastly inferior goal difference must hope for Victory to slip up next week and then beat them in the final game.

All in all, the final match should be a match worth watching, with either the Mariners or Victory being crowed Premiers on the day.
