Central Coast Mariners FC 0
lost to
Brisbane Roar FC 1
(James Meyer 82')

The Mariners lost this match, and their one hundred per cent record, although they played the whole of the second half against ten men.

The game began slowly, and for the first twenty minutes, with play mainly concentrated around midfield, there were very few attacking breaks. Indeed, it was the 22nd minute before anything of real interest happened, and that was a deft back-heel pass by Roar's Ross Archibald to teammate Jason Geria, who with the goal wide open was brilliantly tackled by Hayden Morton to save the day.

Five minutes later the Mariners had a similar opportunity, when a move involving Anthony Caceres and Brad McDonald, ended with the ball going to Aaron Peterson who, with the goal at his mercy, pushed his shot wide.

Play got very scrappy and willing for the rest of the half with three players receiving cautions for indiscretions, including Roar's Luke Bratttan, who had previously been show a yellow card for dissent, and subsequently was shown a red card.

Following the half time break, the Mariners took control of the game, and for twenty five minutes had Brisbane penned in their own half and mostly around their penalty area, but the goal would not come, mainly due to poor finishing by the attackers and some resolute defence from the Roar, including some fine saves by goalkeeper Nicholas Tubbs.

Having survived the onslaught, the Roar started to make an impression on the game with sudden breakaway attacks, and at the 82nd minute mark, James Myer unleashed a rocket like, right foot shot, high into the right hand top corner of the goal past a stunned Jason Pasfield to give Roar the lead.

Mariners tried hard to get the equaliser but to no avail, and as the referee blew his final blast of his whistle, away went the Mariner's undefeated record.

Beyond doubt, Brisbane deserved the three points, and once again showed that ten men can be as equal, or in this case, better than eleven!

Caceres, McDonald and Cirjak showed good from for the Mariners whilst, Meyer, Stubbs and Geria were outstanding for the Roar.

Following the game, Mariner's coach, John McLafferty, was naturally disappointed with the result but pleased with his team's performance.

"We have been trying a different system at training, and today was the first time we put it into use in a game" said McLafferty. "The boys took a while to get into their rhythm, but I was pleased the way they kept trying hard. We have all seen recently how hard it is to play with, or against, ten men and today's match will be big learning curve for them."
