The Mariners Youth team returned to winning form after last week's first loss of the season, with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Western Sydney Wanderers, leaving both the Mariners teams at the top of their respective competition tables.

The weather was a far cry from the sweltering heatwave conditions suffered the previous evening at Bluetongue Stadium, and although still very warm and humid, a cooling breeze prevailed to give some comfort to both players and spectators.

The game started at a very fast pace, and Western Sydney consistently put pressure on the Mariners' goal. The first real chance of the match came when Western's Tarek Elrich made a run through the Mariners defence but his goal bound shot was well deflected by goalkeeper David Bradasevic.

Mariners started to get more into the game and won a corner down the right hand side. Adriano Pellegrino's corner kick found the head of Adam Kwasnik and well directed header opened the score.

Mariners kept pressing and added to their score when Pellegrino fired a shot from twenty metres that left West's goalie Thomas Manos stranded.

Half time came without addition to the score and Mariners coach John McLafferty substituted Mitchell Duke and Pellegrino who had taken apart in the A-League game the previous night.

Western Sydney attacked from the restart with Elrich and former Mariners player Kwabena Appiah-Kubi causing problems for the mariners defence, but all to no avail. The game started to flow up and down the pitch with both sides making scoring opportunities which all went astray.

With about ten minutes of play remaining Mariners Brent Griffiths was shown a red card for very bad tackle on Jayden Koulizakis in the Western Sydney penalty area.

With only ten men, Mariners still pressed and with four minutes remaining substitute Patrick Dixon received the ball in the Wests penalty area, neatly turned his defender and fired a powerful left foot shot high into the corner of the net for a third Mariners goal.

Mariners coach McLafferty was naturally elated that his team had got back into winning ways but more pleased with the manner of the win.

McLafferty added, "Our plan today was to convert the chances that we have been missing over the past few weeks. Although we have been winning, we have missed many chances, or not shooting when we have got into good positions. We are also trying to give the younger players more game time, after all the real aim of the Youth league is the development of young players, and as can be seen with the first grade team, we have been very successful in this regard".
