Central Coast Mariners FC 0
lost to
Melbourne Heart FC 3
(Stefan Mauk 42', Joshua Groenewald 60', 78')

The Central Coast Mariners Youth team lost its second match in row at home, when Melbourne Heart avenged the loss of their A-League side the previous night, at the Mariners Centre of Excellence. Even so, they retained their lead at the top of the competition table, two points clear of Heart who jumped to second position after their win.

Mariners dominated the early stages of this match, played in spasmodic drizzly rain, with Pat Dixon and Tomislav Cirjak causing plenty of problems for the Heart’s defence, but due to the vigilance of former Mariners’ goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne, the goals would not come. On at least two occasions Redmayne thwarted the Mariners attackers who looked certain to score.

At the other end, Mariners’ custodian, David Bradasevic, was confined to back passes from his defenders to get a touch of the ball.

Suddenly the game completely changed when Adam Kwasnik initiated the wrath of referee Lachlan Daniel for using dissent accompanied by foul language, when Kwasnik disagreed with a decision by the assistant referee. Kwasnik was immediately shown a red card for an act that could only be described as “stupid” for a player of his experience.

It is sure that first grade coach, Graham Arnold, who was watching from the side lines, would have been far from impressed with the actions of a player fighting to regain his position in the top team.

Heart’s team mood changed dramatically and immediately gained control of the game and it was no surprise when they took the lead through a great shot by Stephen Mauk from the edge of the penalty are in the 42nd minute.

Mariners tried valiantly after the half time break to force the equaliser but all to no avail. When chances came, that man Redmayne was again performing brilliantly.

Fifteen minutes into the second half Hearts increased their lead when hardworking captain, Joshua Groenewald, when his vicious shot from the edge of the penalty area left Bradasevic stranded.

Mariners kept trying and Daniel Bragg fired a free kick from the corner of the penalty box over the bar, and then Anthony Caceres went on a dazzling run from just inside his own half but his finish was a repeat of Bragg’s effort.

With twelve minutes remaining, Hearts received a free kick about 25 metres out from the Mariners’ goal. Up stepped Groenewald and his looping kick beat all and sundry to make the score three nil!

Mariners had another couple of attacks but all to no avail, and Hearts ended up worthy winners and jumped to second place in the competition table.
