Central Coast Mariners FC consolidated their top spot on the ladder with a solid 2-0 win over Melbourne Heart FC at Gosford last night, through a brace from right back Pedj Bojic.

In the 4th minute Pedj Bojic stepped up for a free kick, 'looking to recreate his magic from round 4'. He curled it just inside Clint Bolton’s left post forcing an outstretched hand to save from the Heart custodian.

Bojic almost turned villain as he headed a ball back across his goal in an early Heart attack, but it was eventually cleared and the Melbourne side couldn't capitalise on the error.

Although the home side was doing most of the attacking the Heart looked very organised, closing the lines and pressuring the ball at every opportunity.

In the 29th minute Bernie Ibini-Isei got into a scoring position but his shot ended as a weak lob to the waiting hands of Clint Bolton.

A shot from Michael McGlinchey was blocked in the 42nd minute, and the half ended 0-0.

n the 49th minute the Coast took the lead through Pedj Bojic. Free on the right he made space and angle for his shot and it swirved and dipped. Clint Bolton got down to it as it bounced but spilled the ball, and it continued over the line despite the best efforts of a defender to drag it out. 1-0

Mat Ryan had a scare in the 57th minute but in the 62nd minute Tom Rogic had two cracking shots blocked by a prostrate Patrick Gerhardt, and then Bolton was called on for a one handed parry at full stretch to clear.

The usually free-scoring Daniel McBreen was 'on the nervous 90s' it seemed, seeking his 10th goal, and hot a shot over the cross-bar off a great run and pass from Tom Rogic in the 65th minute.

A free-kick was cheaply conceded 25m out on the left and Pedj Bojic made it 2-0 to the Mariners in the 69th minute, with a wickedly dipping shot that snuck through Clint Bolton's defences like a Dambusters bomb. 2-0

I'd like to say that the Heart had a few chances, but my notes dont support it! Ryan did have to make a save off a glancing header and certainly they played some nice football and kept their shape so perhaps it is down to the Mariners defence, well exampled by young Trent Sainsbury.

In the 78th minute Sainsbury spied an opportunity 50m up field, and pinpointed a pass to a moving Daniel McBreen. He set off with Clnt Bolton on the way to cover. The big striker lifted the ball over the advancing 'keeper but it didnt have the pace to evade the run of Gerhardt who was able to clear.

A thouroughly deserved win over a side that looked the goods but left them gift-wrapped at the store instead of slotting them under the tree.

Mariner coach Graham Arnold siad, after the game: “The players are extremely confident and when they’re getting the ball they’re seeing two or three pictures and more players available as well, which gives them more choices and better choices to make. When the field opens up a bit the likes of Tommy (Rogic), (Michael) McGlinchey and Bernie (Ibini) can just tear teams apart with ‘Rosey’ (Joshua Rose) and Pedj (Bojic) coming from in behind.”

He was cautious however. “As I said to the boys yesterday and just now, we’ve achieved nothing,” Arnold said. “We’ve put ourselves in a great position to have a successful season but we’ve achieved nothing. They don’t hand trophies out in December, they hand them out at the end of March, April. There’s still 16 games to go and the players have set their own standards in terms of performance. The players know exactly what I want, and I won’t let up on them. There will be no complacency that will sneak into the dressing room. The players know that if they have one or two off games, there’s a good chance they won’t play next week.”

On Bojic: “He’s putting in the hard yards at training and when we get free kicks around the box he’s stepping up with confidence. Melbourne Heart must be sick of the sight of him because that’s three goals that he’s scored against them. He’s striking the ball well at the moment and full credit to him.”
