The fireworks were definitely kept to later when Perth Glory again failed to win at Gosford, with the home side rising from first half lethargy and winning 1-0 with a disputed goal to Bernie Ibini-Isei in the 68th minute.

The Mariners were without four regular starters in their defensive rock Patrick Zwaanswijk, golden boot leader Danny McBreen, captain John Hutchinson, and the rising Tomas Rogic. Glory were to rue the missing fringe Socceroo Michael Thwaite.

There was speculation that Coast's coach Graham Arnold would have to revert to a 4-4-2, but he slotted attacking midfielder Oliver Bozanic into a defensive role from his Olyroo games normally which is normally taken by Hutchinson. Adam Kwasnik had to patrol as lone striker.

The highlights of the first half were few and far between.

In the 17th minute Glory's custodian Danny Vukovic came out quickly to two-hand punch the ball away from a speeding Michael McGlinchey.

The best chance of the game was Shane Smeltz's in the 36th minute. The outcome was not expected by anyone in the crowd I suspect. Mike McGarry rushed into the area to chest a ball from Travis Dodd away from Trent Sainsbury and the momentum took him wide on the left. He hit a sweet cross over to Shane Smeltz on the right, but the Kiwi marksman's compass went awry as he hit it metres wide.

Both Mariner's 'keeper Mat Ryan and Vukovic had to clear just before half-time but the fact that for the first time in well over a year a mexican wave got going at Central Coast Stadium tells you all you need to know.

Refreshed by the break, or perhaps the cooler conditions, both sides looked sharper from the kick-off.

Kwasnik had a textbook diving header in the net in the 48th minute but he was clearly off-side. Arnold made a crucial change at 53 minutes - he took off the ineffective Adriano Pelligrino bringing on Bernie Ibini -Isei and moved Michael McGlinchey in behind Kwasnik.

In the 57th minute Joshua Rose and Michael McGlinchey combined down the left and it was only great defensive work by Bas van den Brink that shiled Vokovic.

In the 63rd minute Liam Miller received a ball while free in the area but could not control it before Zac Anderson closed. Two minutes later Mile Stejovski send a ball square from the left but Adam Kwasnik was too far forward to be able to get any power or angle on his header and sends it over the crossbar.

The pressure on the Glory was mounting and in the 68th minute Oliver Bozanic curled a ball from the left into the area where Scott Jamieson was seeking to cover Bernie Ibini-Isei. Two things worked in the home sides favour. Jamieson lost his footing and the ball bounced up and off Bernie's arm and into the clear. He was able to steer the ball past the advancing Vukovic. 1-0

Whether referee Delovski should have judged hand-ball or not is a reasonable debate. But he didnt, the 'ball bounced' that time for the Mariners and the goal stands.

It almost went to two-nil when Mile Sterjovski hit a wicked groud hugging shot from 40m that Vukovic just managed to wedge between his feet as it passed under his diving form.

A welcome and on balance deserved win for a depleted home side, that kept them firmly on top of the ladder ahead of the Reds. Glory dissapointed, given their personnel and recent gritty wins.
