It was a terrific tie in the end as the Melbourne Victory played some lovely passing football and dominated the first half but allowed the Central Coast Mariners to come back into the game in Launceston in the second to make it 1-1.

After the media dramas for the Mariners during the week, it was a great time for the Victory to close the gap but in the end they fell short.

As early as the 2nd minute Archie Thompson forced Maty Ryan to block a shot, but fortunately though it rolled to an unmarked Marco Rojas who was judged off-side.

A few minutes later both Mark Milligan and Thompson shot wide, and it became clear that the Central Coast were pinned back in their half.

At last in the 16th minute a great run down the left flank by Daniel McBreen ending in a clinical cross, led to a Mariners chance. Adam Kwasnik met the ball under pressure and hit a shot, but Nathan Coe had closed the angle and managed to smother it.

Two minutes later Archie Thompson blasted a shot well over, after a pass from Marco Rojas from the left.

In the 31st minute the pressure of movement into the Mariners defence told, when Nick Montgomery clipped a Victory player just inside the area. Referee Gillett pointed to the spot, but Marco Rojas sent the penalty strike onto the left upright as Mat Ryan in the Mariners goal dived to cover.

In the 42nd minute Marcos Flores steered a fine cutback from the left by Adama Traore into the net, past a possibly unsighted Ryan. 1-0

Coach Graham Arnold had been sent from the bench shortly before half-time - so perhaps he was fired up in his team talk at the break. Certainly the visitors came out with better shape and passing.

In the 53rd minute firstly Joshua Rose from the left hit a shot that was parried, then Danny McBreen hit it wide.

The visitors were now creating the chances on the counter-attack, but the next clear chance was for the Victory. Marco Rojas hit a shot from an angle on the left and Mat Ryan, who was back-pedalling, managed to twist and tip it over the cross-bar.

Nathan Coe made an equally stunning save off a Michael McGlinchey volley.

It was McGlinchey whose runs into the area led to the Mariners goal. Attacking a ball falling into the area, he was clattered into by the Melbourne captain Adrian Leijer and knocked down. Danny McBreen stepped up for the awarded penalty and beat Coe, to even the scoreline. 1-1

Both teams continued to seek out chances but it ended even.
