Central Coast Mariners FC threw down a 'catch me if you can' challenge to their closest rivals last night in Gosford with a 5-0 'dousing & plucking' job on the rather battered bird that is Wellington Phoenix.

The game started well enough for Ricky Herbert's lads as they looked to close space in the mifield and break through Belgian Stein Huysegems. In the 5th minute this almost paid off as the striker slipped the off-side and was free but couldn't control the ball for a clean shot on target.

One minute later it was similar trick when Bernie Ibini Isei was played on to a ball over the top, but as Mark Paston came well off his line the Mariners prospect couldn't lift the ball high enough at a stretch to beat the gloveman.

As the home side wound up their attacking moves the visitors flooded them early to break down any chances, but still in the 19th minute Mark Paston had to be at his best to palm away a Daniel McBreen strike, with his fingertips.

Joshua Rose was becoming more influential down the left, and in the 30th minute Rose crossed the ball from the byeline at the left toward Bernie Ibini-Isei but his pass took a detour, hitting defender Hogg and bouncing off Paston to fall to Ibini-Isei who scored from close range. 1-0

The Wellington side looked to hit back, and Mariners 'keeper Mat Ryan was forced to make a save of Isaka Cernak before half-time.

After the oranges the Mariners ramped up the pressure across the park, and the well-drilled deep defensive work from the Phoenix began to get shaky.

McBreen's snap shot on the right was wide, but from corner on the left Michael McGlinchey's shot forced Paston to again punch clear.

Rose was finding huge space down the left and three times in 9 minutes he crafted opportunities for his team-mates, alas squandered. The worst Pedj Bojic heading wide and then glancing a ball wide with an opening goal mouth.

In the 68th the scoreline clicked over when Mile Sterjovski was free on the left and slotted a ball into the box, which evaded Paston but found John Hutchinson coming in at the far post to slam it in from close range. 2-0

In the 69th minute the Mariners won a corner on the left, and from it Daniel McBreen scored with a pouding header. 3-0

Ibini-Isei almost added to his tally in the 82nd minute when faced with Paston in the box but his rear foot flick just went wide. He redeemed himself 4 minutes later when he latched onto a ball at the edge of the area and striding past his markers steered it past Paston's outstretched arms. 4-0

Icing on the cake in the 90th minute when substitute Mitchell Duke, striding down the middle and on-side, received a well weighted pass from John Hutchinson and nut-megged the advacing Wellington custodian to score. 5-0

The win keeps the Mariners Premiership hopes well on track with a buffer of 6 points overnight on Melbourne Victory and 12 goals in front of third placed Wanderers - both of whom they play at home in coming weeks.
