(Bernie Ibini-Isei 13')

Perth Glory FC gave their new coach Alistair Edwards the best of starts with an impressive 2-1 win over the league leaders Central Coast Mariners FC in Perth in front of a crowd of 5,909 on Saturday evening.

The game started at a cracking pace in the warm evening with Chris Harold particularly apparent down the right for the home side, causing Mariners 'keeper Mat Ryan some concern twice in the first 10 minutes.

The visitors thought they may have drawn first blood when Bernie Ibini-Isei cut back the ball inside from the right in the 9th minute and league top scorer Daniel McBreen hot a stinging shot on target. Glory 'keeper Danny Vukovic managed to touch it over the crossbar.

Four minutes later it was the Coast who drew ahead on the scoreline. Daniel McBreen robbed Steve McGarry of the ball out-side the penalty area on the left, and pushed in to Ibini-Isei who collected and strided forward, placing the ball forcefully past Vukovic. 0-1

Eigth minutes later the Mariners almost had a second but Michael McGlinchey scuffed his free shot over the bar after some more good work down the right by Pedj Bojic.

In the 27th minute Glory grabbed the initiative and equalised through a peice of opportunism. With room in roam deep in midfield Nick Ward saw the run of Travis Dodd, and picked him out as he entered the penalty area. Dodd controlled the ball on the blind side of Joshua Rose who had come across the cover and slipped his shot past Ryan and into the right side of goal. 1-1

It is debateable whether the Mariners were ordinary after the break or the Glory boys had their tales up. Certainly Perth were in with a chance. In the 63rd minute Josh Risdon hit a screamer from nearly 40m out on the right and it cannoned off the crossbar with Ryan grasping.

A minute later and it was Risdon who sent in a flat corner from the right that Shane Smeltz rose to and steered a glancing header into the left side of Ryan's goal. 2-1

Mariners coach Graham Arnold made some chan ges to personnel and formation but it didn't seem to work, though both substitutes Nick Fitzgerald and Mitchell Duke did create chances late in the game.

It was a very diffrent Glory that we've seen most of the season. They were sharp, controlled midfield and the quality of the squad at last shone. Whether the coaching change made it happen is open to conjecture. As for the Mariners, they were punished for again creating many chances but not putting their opponent on the ropes, and they paid the price for it for the 3rd time this season - and now sitting just 1 point ahead of the Wanderers.
