Central Coast Mariners FC 6
(Mitchell Duke 17', 32', Michael McGlinchey 56', 86', 90'+1, Nick Fitzgerald 81')
defeated
Melbourne Victory FC 2

Considering the atrocious weather conditions, the Mariners turned on a superb performance before a surprisingly large crowd on a surprisingly good pitch. The rain was torrential and the wind howled, but 6081 wet Mariners supporters couldn't have been happier as their team steamrolled a shocked Melbourne Victory.

From the kick off it was obvious that the Mariners were intent on regaining their competition top spot lost to Western Sydney two hours earlier. From the fourth minute when Nick Montgomery fired a shot just past the Victory goal the Mariners dominated, with Bernie Ibini and Michael McGlinchy showing dazzling speed and footwork to set up chances.

At the 17 minute mark, Ibini set off down the right hand flank and Mitchell Duke was on hand to neatly tuck the ball into the back of Victory's net to open the scoring.

Melbourne had a period of possession and after 23 minutes Duke was adjudged to have tripped Daniel Mullen in the Mariner's penalty area. Mark Milligan took the penalty kick and although Matt Ryan appeared to get a hand to the shot he could not stop it from entering the net for the equaliser.

The Mariners again went in search of goals and Mitchell Duke atoned for his earlier misdemeanour and scored his, and his team's second goal by neatly latching on to a through ball, rounding Victory goalie Nathan Coe and placing the ball into an empty net.

Half time came and the players went for a well deserved break and a dry off!

The second half commenced the same way as the first with the Mariners in control, and eleven minutes after the break McGlinchy scored the first of his pending hat trick when he received a great pass from Duke, and neatly buried the ball past Coe to make the score 3-1!

Twenty minutes from full time Victory scored a surprising goal when Ryan dived and pushed away a cross from Diogo Ferreira and the ball bounced of Sainsbury into the net.

The rain continued to pour down and the Mariners continued on their merry goal scoring spree with three goals in the last ten minutes.

Nick Fitzgerald scored his first goal of the season when he latched onto a McGlinchy pass and neatly turned his marker and fired an unstoppable shot past Coe.

Five minutes later McGlinchy received a sublime pass from Ibini and beat Coe all ends up to score his second goal.

Five minutes later McGlinchy completed his hat trick in added time, when McBreen fed him the ball and he neatly chipped the advancing Coe to make the score 6-2.

The game came to an end and the rain appeared to get heavier but the players paraded before the soaked, but jubilant crowd to receive their well earned plaudits.

The Mariners are in for a heavy week with an AFC Champions League match on Wednesday night followed by a possible Premiership decider against Western Sydney on Saturday night.

Without doubt The Mariners will need to repeat this performance to retain their undefeated home record this season and hopefully take a four point lead on the competition table. A Western Sydney win will give them a two point lead.

Should be "House Full" signs at Bluetongue Stadium on Saturday night to watch this blockbuster! [Ed. Barring another biblical flood]
