Brisbane Roar FC 0

The Central Coast Mariners defeated Brisbane Roar 1-0 at their windy, white capped Brisbane Water-side home this evening. The win kept the Mariners in with a mathematical chance of top spot, and guaranteed a top 2 finish. For the Roar, it dented severely their chances of a top 6 finish.

With the wind at the backs of the home side, the game started off with both team 'circling each other' looking for weakness. It wasn't until the 13th minute when from a corner from the right for Brisbane Roar, Steve Lusica curling a shot into the wind that just cleared the crossbar.

Eleven minutes later one of the best chances of the match was thwarted by Brisbane 'keeper Michael Theo. From a long throw by John Hutchinson on the left, Nick Fitzgerald nodded it on to Michael McGlinchey whose rising stinging shot drew a great save from the custodian, just managing to deflect it up and over the crossbar.

In the 25th minute Michael Theo was again called on to make a fine save, but the rebound was blasted over the bar.

In the 35th minute the, at times latent, talent of Bernie Ibini-Isei came on show when after some jigging work around the edge of the penalty area on the right, he cut inside and balsted the ball into the net despite the finger-tips of Theo. 1-0

Fitzgerald again combined with McGlinchey just before half-time but the Kiwi international midfielder's snap volley was blocked.

In the 62nd Joshua Rose cross found McGlinchey in the area, but he failed to hit the target with another close range volley as the wind swirled.

Brisbane were not without chances. Stefan Nijland and Besart Berisha raced to the other end of the pitch, but Dutchman Nijland couldn’t get the better of the Central Coast Mariners gloveman Mat Ryan.

Brisbane pressed hard, and the tiring defence struggled to last the four minutes of stoppage time - but it was a gutsy effort on top of loss in Sydney, and loss away in Japan midweek. The Mariners also managed to keep a clean sheet and deservedly ran out winners over a desperate Brisbane side.

“I thought the effort and the performance in our defensive structure, and the fight, was exceptional,” Mariners coach Graham Arnold said after the game. “It could have been three or four at half time. Theo made some good saves, and we totally dominated in the first half. We’ve sewn up second spot (and) for this Club, this season has been a massive success already.

Arnold indicated to the press that he would look to rest players leading into the Hyundai A-League Finals Series
