Central Coast Mariners have finished the final round of the regular Hyundai A-League season on Easter Saturday with their younger side earning a 2-1 win over a ten-man Melbourne Heart at Central Coast Stadium, Gosford.

With second spot gained Graham Arnold gave a debut Mariners first team appearance to Brad McDonald, and had five first choice players rested, giving more opportunities to Anthony Caceres and Brent Griffiths. Lowly placed Heart for their part had been decimated earlier the season with key men out, like Fred, Germano, and Kalmar plus Aziz Behich now overseas.

McDonald looked lively early on the left but it was right back Pedj Bojic who, 11 minutes in, got forward and hit a left foot shot on target. Heart custodian Clint Bolton had it well covered.

Danger man for Heart Richard Garcia struck a low shot at goal from 27m but fortunately Mariners 'keeper Justin Pasfield produced a diving save to push it right and his right to deny him. 3 minutes later Josip Tadic got away from his marker and drew a save from Pasfield.

But the Mariners looked to be in control and in the 33rd minute Brad McDonald received down the middle, saw Daniel McBreen wide on the right and set him up with an angled pass. His shot was parried by Bolton but only to McDonald who had followed through.

The former Fury man hit a shot but as it passed Patrick Gerhardt heading for the net, the defender was judged by close-by referee Jarred Gillett as hand-balling. Daniel McBreen claimed the chance, and showed great relief as he netted past Bolton; getting a monley off his back and pushing his claims for Golden-Boot.

It was the Mariners in control, though Heart toiled manfully.

The lead was extended in the 64th minute when Anthony Caceres beat three in midfield, and carried the ball forward. He pushed it into the path of substitute Mitchell Duke who slotted it under the advancing Clint Bolton.

That man Richard Garcia, who hadn't given up, drew one back when the usually rock-solid Zac Anderson was disposessed inside the area on he left. Garcia pounced on the ball and steered it past Pasfield.

Graham Arnold was upbeat, "Overall I am happy with the season. It took a side who got 34 points out of 36 to beat us over the line.”

“It was important for us to finish in the top two,” he said. “Its (the Finals) going to be tough, and we’re fortunate that we’ve got the ACL to keep us ticking over because the week off can damage teams at that time of the season. You can lose your rhythm a bit so we’re fortunate that we do have the ACL to keep us ticking over. Its been a great season by us. I’ve just got to keep the boys working hard over the next month and we’ll see what comes of it.”

The Mariners now have two fixtures against China’s Guizhou Renhe on Wednesday at home and Tuesday week away in the 2013 AFC Champions League Group Stage to focus on before turning their attention to their sudden-death clash in the finals series semi-final.

Heart coach John Aloisi didn't appear after half-time as he had been binned by the referee in the tunnel. He was clear on his view after the game. "Clearly he didn’t handball it and it changed the game.”
