Adelaide United FC 1
(Dario Vidosic 3')

It wasn't a classic smash-and-grab raid, but Adelaide United made the start of Brisbane Roar's season go from bad to worse as they came away from Suncorp Stadium with a 1-0 win last night.

Dario Vidosic curled a superb right-foot free kick over the wall and into the top corner of Michael Theo's net in only the third minute of play, and that sublime moment proved to be the final difference between the sides.

There were lots of other differences: how well each team could run, tackle and pass seemed to favour Brisbane. How well a team could hold possession was a difference, also in favour of Brisbane. Shots on goal from a narrow angle, or from outside the box, also in favour of Brisbane.

But in truth none of these differences made the difference that Dario Vidosic made, and Adelaide can be well satisfied with a fine defensive performance and a good win.

They got lots of players behind the ball, but that was largely because the Roar allowed them to, as time and again Roar attackers pulled up on the counter attack, especially in the first half, and looked around for support players behind them.

Brisbane moved the ball too slowly in attack for most of the game. The first half certainly, and the last part of the game as well.

Early in the second half Brisbane had its brightest spell, and had Adelaide pinned back for a succession of corners on at least a couple of occasions.

But Galekovic was obdurate in goal, and his defence were compact and well-organised in front of him, and the Roar had no clear-cut chances from directly in front of goal. Besart Berisha was well-mashalled all game, and in the end had very little impact. Thomas Broich and Massimo Murdocca were Brisbane's most productive players, along with attacking wingbacks Ivan Franjic and Shane Stefanutto.

But it was the Brisbane Roar that Adelaide expected to play, and they countered them well. With the 1-0 goal lead, Adelaide could afford to defend grimly. They went close to conceding the equaliser in post-corner goalmouth scrambles on three or four occasions in the second half, but always got a foot in, or blocked the shot, or Galekovic made the save.

On the evidence of this performance, Brisbane Roar under Rado Vidosic have lost a little of the self-belief that was so important for the patient possession game that they became famous for over the past two seasons. Many Roar moves which did not result in a clear chance ended with a wild shot from distance. Paartalu and Broich were both guilty of blazing away when it was clear that an attacking move had run out of ideas
