Brisbane Roar’s stuttering season took a turn for the better with a shaky 1-0 home win over Newcastle Jets at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday night.

The only goal in a below-par game came from the penalty spot. Jack Hingert – best on ground for Brisbane on the night – was bundled over by a clumsy challenge from Josh Mitchell. Besart Berisha dispatched the spot kick like a top scorer should.

But the big talking point of the game came just before halftime, when Josh Mitchell and Thomas Broich were sent off after an altercation that drew every player on the pitch, as well as the referee and two linesmen.

Broich stepped into Mitchell’s way after the defender had made a pass. Mitchell was knocked over, and got up incensed and shoved Broich. At this point players converged from all points of the compass. Paartalu and Chapman were two of the first on the scene, and further shoving ensued.

At the end of it all, referee Brenton Hayward showed a second yellow card to Mitchell, and a straight red to Broich.

It was baffling.

But with Newcastle a goal down, and both sides a man down, surely this would make a fairly dull game into a more entertaining encounter in the second half.

Unfortunately not. Brisbane showed plenty of signs in the second half that they were happy enough to be leading 1-0. And Newcastle rarely committed sufficient players forward to put much pressure on the Brisbane goal.

Each side had one good chance to score in the second half. Michael Theo batted away a powerful Ryan Griffith’s goal-bound volley. And at the other end, Henrique totally wasted some wonderful lead-up work by Jack Hingert and Ben Halloran when his weakly-hit shot was saved by a scrambling Nash.

So it was a win for the beleagured champions, but not one which will satisfy the rumblings around the camp.

Brisbane have looked short of central defenders all season, and with Matt Smith and Ivan Franjic away with the Socceroos for this game and next week’s match as well, Matt Jurman and James Donachie had the job of handling Emile Heskey.

And they managed it well, although most of Brisbane’s defending in this game came further up the pitch. They won it back very well in midfield, with Paartalu and Murdocca.

Newcastle were disappointing, and in particular failed to involve Heskey in lead-up play, or provide him with service to score goals from. Zadkovich and Wheelhouse both sat very deep, leaving almost all of the heavy lifting in terms of creativity to Ryan Griffiths. It wasn't enough.
