Central Coast Mariners FC have leap-frogged Adelaide United FC at the top of the A-League table, with a hard fought 2-1 win in Gosford this evening.

Both sides had key players out on international duty, notably Mariners 'keeper Mat Ryan and playmaker Tomas Rogic. The Reds were missing a similar set in playmaker Dario Vidosic and 'keeper Eugene Galekovic.

With still mid-thirties heat having thinned the 6,885 crowd the game kicked off with the home side quick to go on the attack. Makeshift Mariners playmaker Michael McGlinchey got down the left and cutting in his shot was parried by Adelaide's Young Socceroo 'keeper Paul Izzo.

The Mariners were crafting chances almost at will, and then butchering them. Against the balance of play Zenon Caravella found himself with an opening to get forward and the ball found Bruce Djite. The international striker had a point to prove and that he did, turning to his left with no pressure on him. He drove a shot along the deck from 20m that gave Justine Pasfield no chance. 0-1

That goal failed to lift the game, and it was only as cooler air streams became more persistent off the Water around the 40 minutes mark that things livened up.

Midfielders Nick Montgomery, and Zenon Caravella missed chances before the break, but it was a momemnt of magic by Joshua Rose that set the balance of the scoreline again. Perhaps frustrated by his team-mates skying balls onto the electronic scoreboard, his run in from the left (after a neat switch of the ball from Danny McBreen) seemed to say 'I'm not going to miss'. And miss he didn't! Slamming his shot low and at an angle from the left leaving Paul Izzo grasping in the Reds goal. 1-1

The home side dominated the second half. McBreen got down the left early on and hit a wingers cross that Izzo parried. It deflected to Bernie Ibini-Isei, who blasted his shot over the crossbar to the dismay of the crowd!

It was after Mariners coach Graham Arnold brought on striker Mitchell Duke in the 58th minute to replace Ibini, and shuffled his formation, that the Mariners looked like scoring.

It was his persistence to chase and take the ball forward that led to the next goal. That ball ended loose outside the penalty area, and substitute Adriano Pellegrino was back to goal so he left it for the advancing Nick Montgomery. The former Sheffield United midfielder hit his shot downward and it evaded all to lodge in the back of the Red's net. 2-1 Even the insertion of Sergio van Dijk and Iain Ramsay could not saprk Adelaide's attack.

Mariners Coach Graham Arnold said he knew that despite the stifling conditions, his team would give him yet another determined performance. “I’ve said it many times before but it is such a joy to work with these guys because you know that they are going to go out there and give everything they’ve got,” Arnold said post-game.

“We have to be honest and say that we were very sloppy in the final third, and on many occasions we had three-v-two or three-v-one opportunities and we didn’t execute it properly like we have been in the first eight rounds. (But) I put that down to the heat factor. The first thing that goes when you’re fatigued and tired is your brain, and decision-making.”

Arnold also had praise for match-winner Montgomery. “Monty is fitting in very well with (John) Hutchinson beside him. The experience that Hutch and Monty give in front of two youngsters in Zac Anderson and Trent Sainsbury is invaluable. But I am very happy with the whole team.”
