Newcastle Jets came back in the Round 12 W-League game at Broadmeadow today to draw 3-3 with finalists Melbourne Victory and gain a valuable point. This moved the wooden spoon on to Adelaide United and means that the Victory will now have to travel to play Perth Glory in WA next week.

The home side were on the back foot from the whistle as the Melbourne side pressed high. In the 4th minute this told when Jessica McDonald moved up wide on the right and hit a long ball past the goal area. Fortunately it fell to Amy Jackson out on the left whose cross was curled by the sea breeze and it dropped onto the right upright, and rebounded over the goal line. 0-1

Newcastle's excellent 'keeper Eliza Campbell was under a lot of pressure but in the 9th minute she showed her confidence with a full-diving interception of a smartly struck cross in the area.

It was one-way traffic and in the 23rd minute Campbell had to get down quickly to gather a daisy-cutter from McDonald.

It wasn't a surprise that in the 30th minute the Victory capitalised on a loose ball at the edge of the penalty area that the Jets couldn't clear. Enza Barilla controlled it well and half-volleyed it into the net. 0-2

The home side attempted to rally, with two half-chances created.

The break-through came. In the 40th minute they were granted a free-kick at the right side of the penalty area and Melbourne were unable to clear Emily van Egmond's free-kick. The up to now isolated Jasmin Courtenay lept at the chance and netted. 1-2

Before the visitors could perhaps compose themselves, the Jets had the ball in the net again. A series of blocked shots from the Newcastle players eventually rebounded to van Egmond 30m out and she hammered her shot past the Victory 'keeper Brianna Davey. 2-2

It was almost 3 to the home side in the 50th minute when a wayward back-pass by Rebekah Stott allowed Tara Andrews to shoot, and had it not been for the fast work of Davey in the Melbourne goal who parried her shot, they may have taken a shock lead.

Hayley Crawford saved some Jet's blushes in the 55th minute when she headed clear off the goal-line from a corner.

The mounting Melbourne pressure told in the 60th minute when after a double save by Jet's 'keeper Campbell, a careering rebound onto Crawford ended in the net. 2-3

Newcastle werent laying down - Tori Huster lobbed a ball over the defence onto the running van Egmond but Davey read it and covered well.

Referee Lara Smith judged that Emily van Egmond had been brought down illegally inside the penalty area, over on the left. She made no mistake in slamming the penalty past Davey. 3-3

Stung by this equaliser the visitors strove to grab a further goal, and the best chance went to Gulcan Koca however she lifted it over the bar in stoppage time.

A most enjoyable, and far too short, regular season came to an end in the fading light for the 450 fans present. Now for the finals series.
