Miserable day for Jets

lost to
Perth Glory FC 6
(Lisa De Vanna 5', Collette McCallum 21', Kate Gill 58', 62', 90'+3, Marianne Tabain 68')

The weather wasn't the only miserable thing for the Jets about this match! For the second successive home game they suffered a devastating loss, this time against a highly professional and experienced Perth Glory team.

The game kicked off under cloudy skies and in miserable drizzling rain, but that didn't stop Glory from putting on a dazzling exhibition of fast, entertaining football. The Jets tried hard but were really never in the game.

It started with five minutes on the clock when Lisa De Vanna latched on to a loose ball just outside the edge of the Jets penalty area and fired a rocket like shot into the roof of the net, giving young Jets goalkeeper, Eliza Campbell, no chance. Perth kept up the attack and for fifteen minutes had the Jets goal under enormous pressure.

Jets then had a good chance to equalise when Alisha Foote latched on to a pass from Tori Huster, but her goal bound shot was tipped over the cross bar by acrobatic goalkeeper Carly Telford.

Back came Perth, and at the twenty first minute mark forced their fifth corner of the match. Up stepped Collette McCallum to take the corner, and her curling kick deceived all and went straight into the far side of the net. 2-0!

Jets had a period when they made a few chances mainly due to the efforts of Huster and Foote, but all to no avail, but it was mainly Perth and only some brave saves from Campbell kept them from adding to the score.

Newcastle started the second half in urgent fashion but Perth resisted all of their attempts, and again went on the attack. Just before the hour mark Aivi Luik tried a shot from about twenty five metres which hit the goalpost. The ball rebounded to an unmarked Kathryn Gill and she had an easy tap in to an empty net to make it three nil.

Four minutes later Gill added her second goal when she received a lovely pass from De Vanna, sped between two defenders and slid the ball under an advancing Campbell for number four!

Gill was again in the action six minutes later when she slipped a pass to Marianna Tabain, who fired in a shot from just inside the edge of penalty area and Perth were 5-0 up!

Some relief came for the Jets when a goal mouth scramble eventuated in the Perth goal area and Huster managed to get a foot to a loose ball to open the scoring for the home team.

The game looked like it was all over when, deep into added time, Perth were awarded a penalty kick and Gill made no mistake from the spot to complete her hat-trick, and complete a resounding Perth victory!

For the Jets Campbell, Huster and Foote tried hard all afternoon, whilst for Perth, Gill, De Vanna and McCallum showed class and experience.
